i was wondering how many people here have sensory issues? i keep hearning of people with none at all.

i have always had sensory issues, it used to be worse i would cry and meltdown and hide when airplanes passed by. I have a fear of balloons because of the popping noise, its extremely painful.

i go through Sensory overload and shut down if im around fluorescent lights for too long or in a loud environment. 1 hour at max

i dont like to be touched, skin on skin bugs the hell out of me.

I chose "Moderate and can be bad."

I've never really found a way to cope with them except to avoid stress generally, which is not easy.

I do not like to be touched especially from the shoulders through the head. I tend to jerk when people do that and that has upset people.

Barking dogs and loud phone ringing bother me.

I can not eat certain foods if they are more then a couple of days old while others eating the same foods will say it still tastes fresh.

I put mild because they are in comparison to what I read hear and elsewhere.

Ironically my brother and nephew who are not autistic have much greater noise sensitivities then me.

You know, I voted mild. However, I don't really think I shutdown so much with sensory stuff. More like if there's an emotional issue like heavy disappointment, or a disagreement, then I may find it difficult to talk. I normally push through and tough it out. Probably just for survival sakes. But of course compared to what I've read of other people's experience, my issues are very, very mild.

Now whenever that train whistle comes blaring by, or the bus lowers and sets off the loud beeper, I'm almost always forced to cover my ears. It's painful. Even though most other people don't seem bothered by it.

Also, I hate it when people whistle. It's uncomfortable to my ears, and feels intrusive to my personal space even if they are across the room. Listening to recorded digital sound at a rate of 11kHz has a subtle chalkboard scraping effect, and makes the music a bit unpleasant to listen to. 8kHz, and 16kHz or higher is just fine, though.

I wear earplugs at the warehouse I work at, and that really helps take the edge off. A lot of my stress has decreased since I started doing that. But I still get somewhat irritated whenever someone slams a pallet down on the ground. I feel the vibration in my torso, and it may just be psychological, I don't know. :? It's pretty much like balloons going off unexpectedly all day at my warehouse with all the pallet slamming, and yes, it IS painful, and stressful.

Smells can be bad sometimes. I can't stand smelling other peoples breath, or certain body oders, or when my little brother puts mozzarella cheese on his scrambled eggs. It makes me a bit nauseous. When I talked with him about how it affects me, he was nice enough to change how he cooked them, and that helped. I hate the taste and smell of fish, even though I grew up on an island. Mixing shrimp with alfredo cheese is probably one of the most disgusting smells in the universe. To me, it is vomit inducing, and I have to clear the room. :eew:

Shutting down for me is more like I just become more quiet and "stand-offish", but I still do my best to get the job done, whatever it is.

I had some when I was little but they don't really bother me nowadays.

I voted Moderate.

I have some pretty bad sensory issues but I know they could be worse. I have a moderate-severe aversion to physical touch and noises. My other sensory issues are mild to moderate.

I...

-Was a sensory seeker before early teens. Intolerant afterwards.
-Learned how to cope after years of seclusion, but of course no filters gained and still as sensitive as.
-No longer have meltdowns via sensory overload or intolerance ever since. (Which is over 4+ years ago)
-Is taking advantage of it in some occasions.
-Still continues to train self. Chaos doesn't overwhelm me anymore, unless under emotional stress. (Usually before/after frustrations)

I vote the middle (3rd) option.
