Here in the US, the three major credit bureus are required, by federal law, to give you a free report annually. I heard a recommendation on the radio that one should check one and then check a second four months later and the third four months after that and then start over again. So, today, I checked my report. It was interesting. As the reports go back seven years I got to see how my taste had changed over time (based on which dept store cards I had taken out and closed).

Even going though the official website of the Gov
http://www.ftc.gov/freereports
the credit report bureaus trys to sell you extra stuff, like a credit rating. None of that is really necessary.

So, if its been a while, and you live in the US, you might consider checking your report.

BeeBee's public service announcement

Kinda pointless now considering I will go in debt quite a bit the next few years. Unless you guys want to fund college for me :) .

I don't have credit yet. I tried earning some at Best Buy once, but the stupid lady put the info in wrong and so I kept getting rejected.

I don't know what my credit looks like, but somehow, as a sixteen year old, I have been preapproved for a fifty-thousand dollar limit Mastercard, I'm also preapproved for an ING card.

It's good to check your credit every once in a while to prevent fraud (eg. identity theft). Someone can open an account based on your info plus a fake address and you will never get the late/collection noticies until the police come knocking on your door.

When I went to buy a house I found out that I had a collection out against me from my ex-wife. To this day I have no idea how that happened because it was in her name but on my credit report.

Read it again, I'm sure it says up to fifty-thousand. That's how they get you in the door.

I destroyed both offers so I can't check, but I'm pretty sure the Mastercard one was for a fifty-thousand dollar card, the ING one was "up to fifty-thousand".

I really wonder who sold my name to them.

"Preapproved" is just a marketing word, it means nothing. Twice I was preapproved for credit cards, and then promptly rejected when I applied.
