Help! The Diversity website for my company is listing the Autism Walk on June 7th. This is an event that appears to be for the sole benefit of Autism Speaks. I do not want this listed on the website, but I am not sure I'll be able to convince them to remove the one event listed for autism without proposing an alternative event for the company to participate in.

Is there ANY sort of alternative national fund-raiser? Any chance of an alternative at about the same time?

How about something in your local area that gives grants to parents that are taking their kids to therapy - or maybe to a camp for autistic kids. You can argue that you'll have a better idea of how the money is being used that way, and it will stay close to home. Around me, Easter Seals has a program. Maybe you could suggest that one, since it's a well-known name if that makes them more confortable.

Oops - I think I missed the point of your first post. There is a walk for MS in Des Moines, Iowa in May? It's part of a national effort. Is that what you meant? Something to suggest instead of autism. You can find it at on the web at www.mswalk.info

Thanks for the suggestion. Actually, the MS walk is already on the calendar. I was desperately hoping for something autism-related.

But, I guess it won't happen.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think the walks are still fundraisers aimed mainly toward the research fund. This was originally started by NAAR (National Alliance for Autism Research), which was merged into Autism Speaks. So, my opinion is to do the walk and help researchers out.

Disclaimer: In undergrad, I worked in a NAAR-funded lab.
