A good month ago I scurried over to this site to do battle with the unreasonable curbies.

I did not find what I had expected. . .

I am an adult aspie. For me, autism is what makes me me. It is the centroid of myself and my life. Some is good, some not so good, all to be dealt with and perhaps even profitably. I am who I am and happily so.

I must realize that not only are there different forms of autism, but further that autism can appear very different depending on whether a person is looking into it or outward from it.

If I was a parent od a currently poorly functioning child. If I was wondering if my child would ever grow into a functional and even happy adult; I think I too might be frantic and in desparation. I too might search - even in improbable places - for a cure.

As I am, I want no cure. There are Wrong Planeteers who do. I so fear a well intentioned genocide of selective abortion and removal of our people from the earth.

But spamming and nastiness is not productive. Calm speech of who we are, and reaching out to help young ones and those who love them is. Can we reach across to benefit all?

Bravo!

I agree with you.

Have Planeteers been spamming other sites?

Yeh. About a month or so ago there was an assault upon the evil curbies. I was armed and ready - being quite against the most severe potential cure of eugenics.

But I hung a while and found that most of them are parents and usually of young children. I grok. We at WP and Z are adults or older kids. We tend to be reasonably functioning.

We have a different viewpoint. Fact is that I like most people on WP and on AS. Different views, same issue. Somehow we must see the similarities not differences as key and talk it out with calm deliberation.

Good folks all around.

It would be nice to have some reformed curbies weigh in, if there are any. The only "reformed" curbies I know are ones who's kids turned the tables on them and grew up autistic without parental permission or perental preparation or parental acceptance.

I think the Autism Speaks campaign makes it seem really scary to have an autistic child. They don't give hope. It's a fear campaign. I wonder if that fear of autism from Autism Speaks campaigns helped drive that mother in Illinois to kill her three year old autistic daughter.

Why would Autism Speak care about Wrong Planet opinions? Autism Speaks makes more money if people are horrified at the idea of autism.

A little while ago, Alex suggested that we lend support to the idea that auties was not a bad word. He pointed us to a specific site and several WP people posted comments.

The comments weren't spam but were general comments which tended to disagree with certain statements. The curbies responded and in many cases followed links back to personal blogs etc and responded in a somewhat fire and pitchfork manner - though some were sensible too.

Some of the curebies obviously read WP as they knew what was going on and pointed the finger at Alex.

Which is exactly why those of us whose lives belie the mythology that autism is simply a fate worse than death must speak out calmly and firmly.

I think the illinois mother may have been motivated by this video that autism speaks produced:

I have noticed so being said about autism. Unfortunately, most of it is said by persons who are not autistic.

On WP are so many persons who are generally happy to be alive, and generally okay with their autism.

We must make ourselves known. Yhe world must be made aware of autism - and not only the negative effects.

curbie? is that someone who has been kicked to the aformentioned?..;)

It's probably counterproductive to fight potential allies...but there's no universal solution, either. Might be a good idea to listen to both sides, and see what works...for you. Your journey begins....

We need to make it clear that we stand against the "battle against autism", but hasseling people isn't the way to do it. If they think of us as disabled, and we act irrationally and insult people, it really isn't making autism look any better. Stand against Autism Speaks, but do it civily

The Autism Speaks site has welcomed me with open arms. I have received comments from members that they had no idea that anyone with autism would not want a cure.

We don't have to stand against Autism Speaks. We can speak civily within Autism Speaks.

Hey,
i've seen it happen how some wp ppl get bashed for their opinions. I a couple months ago, like a long time ago, stated my opinion about how i was anti-cure, even bring up the forum, and how it was just my opinion, that i hope i didnt offend anybody. Yet some parents literally bashed me, with horrible insults, even had other parents back me up, because of how mean some of the parents were. I was in shock, ever since then, i never stated my opinion like that ever again on autismspeaks. I only come on that site now, mainly to help newbies, and other families with coping with autism. I don't really play much into any of the arguements or anything because i dont want to be hurting anybodys feelings because of my own opinion!

I spoke to a researcher today who was very surprised to hear that in this fight for human rights, it is the autistics and the parents duking it out with each other.

He said he would've expected the parents and scientists to be at odds. But once I explained that it's not a very nice feeling to be called, essentially, a disease, he quickly got the picture.

Most of the scientific community is unaware there is actually a human rights campaign going on at all. (Which makes sense considering they hear more from parents than from autistics.)
