I was interested in Zoloft, but my doctor recommend Paxil instead. He said Zoloft can cause you to be jittery. A side effect of Paxil he mentioned is that it can make you drowsy.

What are your experiences with Paxil? What have you heard about others' experiences with it?

According to various studies on the Internet I have just skimmed, Paxil causes some cognitive impairment. Also, a main side effect is weight gain.

Now, I think I would rather start out with Zoloft, which does not have these side effects to the same etent. I'm in college and doing well and don't want any interruption in my studies.

I don't mean to knock Paxil. One SSRI that works for one person may not work for another. If Zoloft does not work, I would probably still be open to Paxil.

I was told there is no such thing as a happy pill. They were wrong Paxil is a happy pill. Miserably happy.

Happiness is not so much main concern. I feel relatively happy right now.

I have skimmed some studies on several SSRIs, from back when the government was deciding whether to approve them for use, that say SSRIs do not help depression very much. Other studies say that they do work. Regardless, it is anxiety and possibly obsessive-compulsive behavior that are my main problems, and the SSRIs are supposed to really be able to help with them.

Paxil is actually the only medication I tried that worked for me at all. It really helped with my anxiety, though that didn't make social situations any less awkward and confusing. Just less frightening. It is also the only one I tried that had side-effects for me. For the first maybe two weeks I was like a walking zombie, exhausted, but that passed. After that, I was just nauseous for a little while every day a certain amount of time after I took the pill. However, after about.. I don't remember now, less than a year.. it stopped working, with upping the dose having no effect. I tried Effexor, Zoloft, and Wellbutrin after that. None of them did a thing for me. After that I got sick of trying medicines and stopped taking them.

Paxil was effective for me. I was very depressed - very - and it helped a great deal.

On the other hand, it did a number on my sexual responsiveness. Yes, as mentioned above, it did prolong things for me, until there were no more happy endings.

I switched to Serzone, and everything worked ok. I was on that for a year or two. Can't remember when or how I stopped taking them.

Hmm. I went back to check the spelling of the name. Did a search in Google. Turns out Serzone was pulled off the market for periodically destroying the occasional liver. Apparently people were dieing.

I'd stay with the Paxil ;-)

Took it for 8 years, and it really helped, but I had to take naps frequently (tough to do at work).

When I tried getting off a few times (starting in the 4th year), I swear it was the worst experience ever. I tried three times, and finally kicked it a year ago, but it was a brutal withdrawal - and I was taking a relatively low dose (20mg). I cannot even imagine how long it takes to taper from a high dose!

You might want to Google Paxil and people's withdrawal experiences before you choose it. I've heard much better things about Lexapro - lower side effects, I think.

Proceed with caution :!:

But good luck! :)

omgosh paxil is the worst, if there ever comes a lawsuit against paxil by me, my mother sueing. They took it off the market for minors due to how many sucicides that have been happening due to being on the drug. That drug made me do some horrible things, that today i still regret. I dont know how it affects some ppl, but i know by me, a lot of ppl got affected the wrong way.

Right, it made me manic so if you are taking it for anxiety well if that is the case you wont have any, but you won't really function either.
