We had "aspie" day last week at school.

We played "In my mind" for his classmates followed by explaining that this is what is going on with my little guy. Then she read "All cats have Asperger's Syndrome". All the little girls in class were crying as well as the teacher.

Needless to say....what the class got out of it (explained on their level) is that he's not trying to get special treatment. He wants friends but has trouble getting them/keeping them. They can be good friends by trying to involve him BUT not being upset if he doesn't want to join in. AND sensory issues were explained to the point that if they rub their arm it feels good BUT to him it feels like someone might be scratching him. Same thing with noises.

It went well. Of course all the little girls in there have the "mommy" complex. One tried to hug him after school and he didn't want any part of it.

I wish I had an AS day when I was in school. Like I stated earlier, I didn't know I had AS, until about 6 months ago. Prior knowledge would have been very useful.

if they did that at my elementary school, by junior high i'd have been a virtual shut-in from all the "ass burger" comments.
i'm sure it works in the short term for younger kids, but they can be kind one year and cruel the next. :-/

either way, i'm glad to hear that it went well for your son. i hope he has a better time in school than i did.

edited to add: i wasn't implying my experience would be the ultimate outcome. i just happened to be a real lightning rod for negative attention in a relatively small school.

I feel that we've been blessed to find out while he's young.

They also had the discussion about people who have been diagnosed with AS or suspected AS. Named off the people (Einstein, Newton, Edison....) and someone in the class said....they're good in science like him.

The school has been understanding and thankfully getting all OT and therapy done quickly.

More people should use the proper German pronounciation.

doesn't matter. as is, if someone has a funny name, kids can bend it to sound like something unpleasant.

Actually I think the problem is how Americans say Ass instead of Arse as we say it in Australia. To us, an Ass is a donkey.
