Today I was at work and it was during my dinner break. The super bowl was playing in the break room and 5 employees were in there watching it and doing loud cheering. It was really loud it hurts my ears. When I was getting a bowl to serve myself some food, they start doing loud cheering again and it startles me, I almost drop the bowl but I catch it and it made me so mad I yelled "I almost dropped the bowl, thanks a lot."
I didn't even say sorry for my outburst. I feel like a jerk.
The men quieted down and one of them from another department kept asking me if I was okay. After I was done eating, I went in the locker room and read my book for the rest of my dinner break.

Get some earplugs. There are high quality ones that block out noise but lets you hear normal sounds quite well.
Also, you might want to be prepared for sudden things like that.
I had a room mate who crapped his pants if you said "Booh!" while talking to him.
It must have been something wrong with his nervous system or something, because that's not a normal reaction.
Might wanna check that out. I mean, what did you expect in a room full ow super-bowl watching dimwits?

Ion,

You could show a little more understanding.

Spokane Girl,

I don't know if ANYONE **HERE** with AS is like this, but today the average NT that loves sports basically feels like the world is going to end, and they will PERSONALLY be hurt, if the team they view as their home team doesn't win. This means they might KILL at such an offense(RARE, but it HAS happened!), and idolize, yell, cheer, etc... at such a "victory". They may talk as if THEY are personally part of the whole thing by saying MY team and WE. Some people have quit jobs just so they could watch a game! Frankly, I view them as ion said in the closing sentence.... DIMWITS!

His advice about the earplugs is good, but they will STILL cheer LOUDLY and you could even feel it in your chest. It might be good to try to go in during a commercial. You are female though, so it is traditionally EXPECTED that you act like that, and they reciprocated by trying to comply. That is nice, and probably about the best you can hope for from them. They may seriously not understand though, so they will treat you with kid gloves for a time. That is why they did things like ask if you were alright.

For what it is worth, I feel 100% as you do. They would likely not treat a man as well as they treated you in such a case though.

I AM understanding.
I have a problem with everything being too loud myself. I can't sleep because of the tiniest noise.
But I'm a man and an aspie to boot, so I try different solutions to my problems instead of, like many NT women, just talk about them.
I worked a short while as a music teacher, for example, and there were a lot of noise, as you might understand.
I got myself a pair of professional musician earplugs. Cost about $8, but they were fantastic.
It blocked out all the noise, but let in the music and people speaking, and they were comfortable as well.
I don't get scared easy, but I do have a long history of clumsiness, so I have learned to anticipate situations very well.
And if you go into a room with a bunch of rowdy sports fans, you'll have to expect sudden shouting.

In the drop zone topic

I hope you are well, Spokane_Girl, and I am glad you have survived another Super Bowl.

(I have since moved from my old address and had to wait before Internet was reconnected. It can be difficult to go without even for a short time.)

Sudden noises can be very disturbing, and cause accidents. It is a shame that even your dinner break cannot be peaceful. I hope this is not a common occurrance, and does not impact on your work environment as well.

When I am distracted in a strange environment I fall. I sincerely hope this does not happen to you. Please take care, and I hope the advice offered by other posters is helpful to you.

I think it's fair that going on dinner break at work, one doesn't necessarily 'expect' the shouting.
Either way, if the ear plugs work, that's great. Sometimes I pull the batteries on my hearing aids. I still hear well without them, but if they are in my ears and off they can work as minor-duty ear plugs. Useful trick for getting stuck next to a compulsive fidgeter while trying to focus on something.

If you have an iPod or something similar, listening to music in situations like this tends to help because it's an organized noise, all of my preferential bands/music genres, and soothing all around. I can focus on the music and not the chaos.
