Any adult here use PECS?
PECS means PICTURE EXCHANGE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM
You print the pictures and can use them for a way to communicate.
I have soooo many problems communicating, and i thought to myself, therapys wont do me any good now, all herbal stuff, all the drugs, nothing works, I already do sign, but since nobody knows it in my fam, its hard to get what i want to say across. Especially when I become nonverbal, i'm not a pointer or anything, so its basically a guessing game with me
. So just yesterday i asked a mother if she could send me some pecs through mail, to maybe help me, she said she would, but i havent got another reply yet. I really hope she does. Anyways does any adult here use PECS? Does it help you?
I thought to myself again, well if i have a child and that child comes out autistic, i'll already be ready and rareing to go haha
.

I don't use PECS, but I do want to communicate thru pictures someday. I contacted the makers of PECS but they never replied to my email. I told them my English skills are lousy and I would like to learn how to use PECS, but they NEVER replied. I am mostly nonverbal myself, I sign ASL & PSE, but I am in the same boat as you are with family...my family doesn't know ASL & refuses to learn it. That really SUX
!
I really wish I could get by without knowing one word of any spoken language in the world, but no. I gotta know a little bit of English, especially written English so that I can read the signs on the roads when I drive again and so that I can use my Text-to-Speech software on my computer to record messages on my communication device ("Listen to Me" from DTK Enterprises).
I point, but I point better when using a laser pointer. Especially at fast-food restaurants where the menu is hung overhead behind the counter. I don't have any money right now to buy a laser pointer. I just had to quit my job at Goodwill cuz 1) they don't pay me a competitive wage, 2) I don't get consistent income from my job there, & 3) the mentally ret*d people there really irritate the living daylights out of me with the noises they make.
At least it's not a "guessing game" with me cuz the only family members' home I ever go to is my parents' house and I'm only there 1x-2x a week, and I really stay out of public GOOD. I only go to three public places on a weekly basis: the Library, the UPS Store, and Bigg's (a grocery store here in Cincinnati, OH, USA). I go to a few other public places 1x-2x a month, but that's it. I just can't feel comfortable in places where I'm the only Signer cuz my communication device only holds twelve 10-second messages. Plus to sign all I need are my hands, and I'd much rather be with people who are smart enough to know sign so that I can use it
.
I just thought I'd reply to your message to say that I am also considering PECS and I think it will help me A LOT when communicating with non-Signers:).

Thanks, yea its good to know other ppl are like me, i can never verbalize what i want to say, its like that part of the brain is completely turned off. Whod you email? whos the maker of pecs anyways? Thats interesting that you emailed them, and that they never responded, thas messed up, you would think they would considering its an autistic emailing them for help, not just a parent. Anyways if all goes right and this parent mails me the pecs, did you want me to let you know, so maybe i could email them to you so you can have them as well? She said she would mail 1,500 sorted pecs!

Really? yea this mother on another forum said she would send 1,500 sorted pecs, so i can have instead of searching for them, or buyin them myself, which would be such a big help for me. I hope she follows through. Do you find it easier for your child to be able to communicate with them? I use to always think pecs were for children but then i thought i have soooo many problems with verbal stuff, why dont i try it, maybe it can help everybody around me during those hard moments especially, like meltdowns and etc...

yes they are very helpful- I dont see why adults cant use them too. It would be easier and less effort than signing. Try googleing "pecs free downloads" and see if you come up with any thing as some disability websites might have them. There not very expensive on ebay though only $8 or so, just put autism in the search and lots come up.
Thanks soo much! hehe

Was given PECS in college, but wouldn't use it as an only communication-find makaton signing easier-there's much more to it,and both family and most staff understand it,doesn't need anything extra carrying around either.

In the past, we've used PECS and it was very valuable. It's almost impossible to walk into an Early Intervention program and not see PECS used in some form or another. I think they'd be good for you and remember, you can make your own. You don't have to use pre-packaged or downloaded ones from programs. You can use your own pictures that suit you.
Good luck.
