Did it come as a shock or was it expected? Were you treated differently or did you see your loved ones in a different light (if they were the ones who were diagnosed)?

My family think I'm crazy. Oh, well.

Are you serious? Why is that? What was your diagnosis?

My younger siblings think I am weird. But they were intrigued with the concept of autism. One of my older brothers loftily declared that it was "just a label," and that I shouldn't accept it. My next older brother was accepting, and strongly suspects he has it as well. My mother got defensive, as if I were seeking to blame her, or something  .

I honestly have no idea. I know they were told, but I don't know what their initial reaction was.

wow. a friend of mine has schizophrenia. havent seen him since he took off to new york and was admitted into an institution. he was actually one of my tattoo artists. great guy. he started declining though..talking to himself etc. last he called me he was going on about some crazy stuff. he couldn't go into a library because the books would talk to him. he even was telling me how he was on a pirate ship growing hydroponic tomatoes.

are you on meds?

Haldol and Seroquel.

I got the first dx when I was 17, right after my parent's divorce. I would get some strange thoughts then. 8O

Now, I get somewhat strange thoughts but they're almost always confirmed. I wen through a slightly superstitious phase and realised it was irrational. If I do recall, schizophrenics aren't really prone to the rational. I don't agree with it this time. I would only take my meds because otherwise my mother would give me hell (and take away my computer).

I think the meds are pretty useless, and they have undesirable side-effects. On some days I swear I haven't a thought in my head. Thought deletion to the extreme! 8O It also slooooooooooooows your remaining thoughts to an almost standstill.

Edit: One upside is feel my remaining thoughts are a little less random. And I'm a bit less paranoid of going outside. It works for agoraphobia. :D

so i'm curious? do you ever hear voices in your head? if so, are they your own? i'm worried about my ex husband. his father told me he has been having delusions and has been mentally declining. he was never formally diagnosed with anything but he has a lot of paranoia like people are out to get him. somebody mentioned borderline personality to me once, but im wondering if he may have schizophrenia. anyhoo, i wish you the best.

I really can't answer that because I don't know. When i was 17 I would sometimes hear my thoughts externalized, which would make me really paranoid, because I would think everyone would hear them. I would also hear random external voices (which I knew were voices because they were always speaking in English in a non-English speaking country.) Looking back it's easier to spot these things than when you're going through them. I was a delusional mess back then.

Edit: on the internal voices I would "hear" mostly jumbled and out of context sentences. I asked at the time and apparently this isn't normal. The internal voices are more difficult to pinpoint when going through a first episode.

This site: http://www.schizophrenia.com is the most comprehensive site I know on psychosis. It's important your husband get helpif he is going through a psychotic episode, because the longer you wait, the more difficult it is. And it can really ruin your live if not 'corrected' soon. I didn't get into college for the longest time because I blew the third part of our local SATs and didn't go to class. I wish you the best too. :)

After all the crap of having to see psychiatrists and doctors it was hard. They had never brought up the word Asperger's or Autism. As a result from all the trouble I caused, I was finally confronted about Asperger's by a therapist from a program. My family was more than relieved, they said it described me to a T and got me a diagnosis. Now I have some people in my family that ask about it.

My mother didn't react that much at all to be honest when I was diagnosed with AS. She said that she suspected something was different about me, but didn't know what. A few weeks after my diagnosis, she said that it was a relief to her.
When I eventually told my father who doesn't live with me, he said..."Thats rubbish, theres nothing wrong with you,". In other words, he was in complete denial. Then again, he barely knows me so he has good reason to i guess.
My cousin, who is six months old than me said..."people with that are ret*ds, like the boy in the book". [he was referring to the book "the curious incodent of the dog in the night time"]. I kind of took offense to his comment.

The rest of my family...well they didn't take much of an interest.
