It depends on whether the rule makes logical sense or not, among other things.

depends on whether it is a rule I or somebody else has made.
if I either create a rule myself or adopt one of someone else's because it seems to make sense, the rule will always be followed.
if the rule has been inforced on me and i think that it makes no sense, it will not be followed.

It depends on the merit of the rule. A good rule I will tend to strictly and rigidly follow and get ticked off when others don't do the same. I ignore and flout crappy rules when possible.

My own actions are in line with the above posters who said they'll follow a rule so long as it makes sense, and in that case they'll follow it very closely. When a rule doesn't make sense to me I challenge it.

In elementary school the teachers secretly* nicknamed me "Gestapo" because I would rat out anybody, anytime, anywhere, and for anything.

*My mom told me this last year.

I always figure that a rule exists for a reason, and unless I know this reason to be stupid (And it has to be really REALLY stupid) then I will not only follow the rule, but enforce it as well.

I didn't want to answer in the poll, I really hate polls. They're impossible for taking enough variables into consideration.

I am most definitely not a notorious rule follower. I also don't think that "rules are meant to be broken". As for the last two options, I also don't just "ignore" any rule. I think I follow my heart and my own mind for the most part. I consider the rules, and would rather not get in trouble if I can help it, but not if it means acting against how I decide to act. I just make it a point to not let others make my decisions for me.

I am a notorious rule breaker. :D

Most of the rules have either no sense or are in conflict with my buisness, so - sayonara, rules! ^_^

ok I try to not break them if there is serious danger of serious punishment for me. XD And if they're too meaningless to be broken, though i still prefer to break them ;] But I'm lazyyy sometimes.

Beeing a rule breaker is stupid though, but it's lots of fun for some weird reason. The middle is the best, but a little boring.

I ignore them when I know I can get away with it and that there won't be negative consequences. Like some traffic rules if there is no one else around, I will go in the 'wrong way' entrance to parking lots for example. It is my way of being rebellious and saying FU to society, because I have to be so controlled all the rest of the time and not show how I feel about it.

Can't select an option to vote for, because I'd answer differently depending on the situation. I don't have a rule about how I approach rules. I have complex network of overlapping priorities & critical thresholds, which influence my reaction (obedience or oppostition) to range of factors in external environment & within my self.
So I follow some rules & I ignore other rules. Don't really know how to compare how I am with other people (in this respect), because everyone would have to go through long list of specific terms asking if one has done this or that. Severe penalties & likelihood of detection deter me from violating a rule, while mild consequences & likelihood of successful deception correlate with my disregarding a rule. Those are tendencies, not absolutes-with many exceptions. How I perceive the "fairness" of application and justifications behind rules matters greatly as well-have my own idiosyncratic/individual value system (what "makes sense" uniquely to me).

I guess I'm more nuanced...I follow the simple rules, gauge the intent of complex rules, and deliver the expected response...but in my own way...;)

Besides, in IT, the rules change constantly. No sense in getting worked up over something that 's not permanent..;)

I always followed rules too much. It used to be that, if I was pushed into saying I would e some place at 1PM, I would be there by 12:30noon! Too many others break rules, and I have been accused of infractions OTHERS have done, etc... so I don't follow rules as much now.
