Echopraxia

Echopraxia is the involuntary repetition or imitation of the observed movements of another. Even though it is considered a tic, it is a behaviour characteristic of some people with autism, Tourette syndrome, Ganser syndrome, schizophrenia (especially catatonic schizophrenia), some forms of clinical depression and some other neurological disorders.

Etymology: Greek "echo (repetition)" and "praxia (action)".

I noticed that I do this. Anyone else?

I mean, look:

How can you not impersonate him? I've been doing that all day.

(I also experience the form of echolalia where I impersonate the person's accent, but that's another thread--I think that's a form of echolalia)

so... you HAVE to jump up and start dancing badly when you watch that?

i don't think i would like that.

(er... to have echopraxia, not your spontaneous dance.)

The dude jumping on the fence kills me every time. As well as ginger Rick and his voice.

And yes, OMFG RICK ROLLED.

And furthermore, yes, I sort of like that song and try to sing it :(

Lost in the 80s topic

Well. I have not been rolled over by Rick because my computer does not like Youtube and all I heard was the old song "Never gonna give you up" by Rick Astley. Ghastly

I do understand about Echopraxia because I do it, because I have become aware of it as it is happening, ot else some NT is chastising me for imitating someone afterwards. I always thought imitation was the sincerest form of flattery. But imitation is catching, almost addictive. Must be a by product of OCD, as yes, we Aspies do it. Some NTs think it is insulting.

The Canadian comedian Rich Little, I believe, was Aspie, and could he imitate others' mannerisms, voices, accents, etc. No one even came close to his talent for Echopraxia.

I think that echopraxia proper would be more like echolalia. The reaction would be immediate. However, I wouldn't hesitate to suggest that there is a possibility of there being a relationship between your...acquired stim...and your AS status.

However, do beware of factitious symptoms. I have actually caught myself affecting behaviors that don't really come naturally to me specifically as a result of thinking, subconsciously, that I was supposed to, being an Aspergian of some kind or other. It is an embarrassing thing to catch yourself doing.

Yes, that is what I'm worried of.

Oh, and it is not so much immediate, but if I see a person doing something, I feel the need to impersonate said person. For example, if you make a certain facial gesture, I will probably do the same thing.
