What about "African" names? I really have to wonder how many of those are actually authentic. :roll:

It depends on the name. Some like Jamal, Alya, Iesha and Akeem are actually Arabic names. Then you have Kenya and Oshun that are authentic. But mostly, we sort of put our own spin on names. I remember in one classroom, we had 3 girls who's names were Natasha, Latasha and Kentosha.

I have mixed feelings about giving my child an Africentric name. Mine is a name that's common with African-American girls and when it comes to sending in job resumes, the employer can identify me as a black woman immediately. It just leaves me too open to discrimination and there's even a study that showed companies respond to resumes with African-American names at the same rate as those that revealed an applicant with a caucasian name spent one year in prison, even when all qualifications were identical.

Was that necessary?

Names: I tend not to like names that are so common as to have become cliche, especially if they are trendy. Examples:

Samantha
Amanda
Brenda (not a lot of young Brendas now)
Darrel
Jason
Jessica- a beautiful name if so many didn't have it
Brittany
Courtney
and so on...

Classically common names don't bug me:

David
Daniel
Rachel
John
William
James
Sarah

Made up names are sometimes quite nice, and authenticity is subjective, so I wouldn't discard one out of hand. That said, I have run across some that were simply horrid. The worst: LaTrina!! Please, people, plug in your brain before naming your kid!

Hippie names don't bug me except when they sound trite, cutesy, or affected: Sunshine or Rainbow would be out of the question. Botanical (Yarrow) or naturalistic (Forest) type names are generally OK.

My second son's legal name is Hilmur, and I hate it!! ! :x He goes by his middle name, Nathan. Not all old fashioned or Old World names are that hideous....but some of them are!

Persephone

One of my good friend's sisters is called Persephone- Percy for short. His other sister is Antigone- Tiggy for short. :)

As for names for my kids...
* Sailor (Hello Sailor!)
* Scrote
* Chlamydia (Hey that sounds like a nice name, I wonder what it means... Hmm, sounds like a type of flower?- lets go with it!)
* Adolf
* Tristan or Tristram (that would just be mean)
* Rurik

um... this could go on for a long time... Its pretty hard to find names that ARE good for your kids- there is a surplus of ones that aren't!

Maybe if Adolf Hitler had a cooler name he wouldn't have killed all those people...

His first name was Adolf Shieckelgruber... if I had that name I would kill SOMEBODY...

"Oh my God! My name is Ted Kacynski! I'll have to work in a university! And kill my co-workers with bombs!"

If you give your kid a bad name... he's going to grow up to be a psycho...

Like hippies... every hippy kid named Fox Moonshadow or Raven Starshine is now working for the Republican Party...

"We've got to extract more crude from Iraq! Have Fox develop strategies for killing the insurgents... God I hate my parents so much"

Yeah, add that one to my list, too. I know 2 men named Butch and both of them are really named Walter. I know two other Walters who are called Bud. If Walter is a name no one wants to use, why give it to your kid in the first place and then replace it with something even worse??? Personally, I like Walter better than either Butch or Bud!
