This question is for people who work, or have worked at a facility, that has designated lunchrooms set aside for lunchbreak. Do/did you avoid these social gatherings? I worked at a facility for 12+ years, and never used the lunchroom. Not even once. I would either sit in my truck, or go for a ride, for that 1/2 hour. Anyone else do/done this?

I would have posted this in the job section but, I figured I would get more responses in this category.

Yes. Along with the whole social aspect of it (and by "social" I mean too many people and possible sensory overload) I had other issues with lunchrooms. The food.

Absolutely! Not only are there lots of people talking, there are wafting smells of all kinds of bad food.

Yes. I have only once been in the cafeteria in my college, and this is my third year. It's horrid.

I go in when others leave so I can swipe the newspaper...but mostly I leave at lunchtime and go listen to NPR in the car. Its funny, when I worked in delivery, the norm there was to eat in the car or maybe one or two would have lunch together...my behavior was the norm.
On the clerk's side, my ability to read a newspaper and not hear anyone talking to me is seen as 'antisocial' or 'wierdo'. My new boss, who also came from delivery, I notice is the same way...we both have started taking our lunches earlier or later than everyone else...she says the noise upsets her...I suspect she *may* be an aspie, so I always ask her if she wants company or wants space before I even sit in her line of vision.

At my school, the students are allowed to eat in the hallways or go off the premises to eat or in the nearby park.

I'm in high school and they only let us eat in the loud, noisy lunch room. So I just speed-eat in like 5 minutes, then as soon as I'm done I go to the library and hang out the rest of my lunch period there.

I always used to avoid the lunch room, when I was in High School. I didn't care for my typical peers, or the noise that they would make.

I've never went to the lunchroom at school because it smells awful and the kids are crazy.

The other day at work I went into the staff lunchroom and there were 2 groups of people sitting at 2 separate tables. I sat down at a third table since no one invited me to sit at one of the other 2 tables. I didn't like sitting between these groups of people ( surrounded but not part of them) and so I picked my food up and walked outside and sat on a bench and watched butterflies and breathed the fresh air. It was quite peaceful. Much more so than being stuck between 2 groups of loud people who felt no need for me.

I eat in the lunchrooms of my schools sometimes alone but I don't mind the lunchrooms one bit.

Lol, I never thought about other aspies doing this but yes, I am very uncomfortable in the lunch/break room at work. Ninety-eight percent of the time I go out for lunch, the other 2% of the time I'm just in there to eat something quickly or to get something to drink, I sure don't hang around and socialize.

I've used the lunchrooms, but I did not like the noise. Unless someone who knew me decided to sit with me, I'd sit alone.

I used to sit in my car during lunch breaks at work, before we got a computer. Now I eat at the computer in the breakroom with my headphones on. Only three co-workers use the breakroom, the other ten eat in different places, so it's not so bad.

I was one of the few at the psychiatric hospital who avoided the cafeteria; I brought the food to my room.

I cannot eat with the noise; I cannot do anything but wish everyone around me would die or something.

I could hardly stand my old school's lunchroom, because it was filled with hostile kiddies and didn't offer any place where I didn't feel watched over all the time.. I did take lunch in there if I could consider myself part of a group, though, but most of the time I simply skipped breakfast and lunch..

It's a lot better at the university, mostly because I'm always part of a group if I eat there.
