I need help guys, I have this friend, he has self-diagnosed himself with some type of schizotypal/schizoid personality and now he's having some troubles. He thinks that these violent thoughts he has in his head could end with him actually hurting/killing someone later in his life, and he refuses to go to a therapist (he's very paranoid) and he does say that sometimes he has hallucinations as a side note. And I'm at a loss for words, I'm trying to help him but I have no idea what to do, what can I do?

Say you're taking him out to dinner, but take him to the psyciatrist office.

That's all I got.

Had four friends with some kind of schizophrenia type disorder - it sounds like the typical response but he really really really needs help.

If you force him into it he may dislike you, but it's what's best for him. You'd hope someone'd do the same for you, right?

You can calm him when he's feeling particularly paranoid or jittery etc, but that's only temporary and you can't stop him from getting worse.

I think you have to treat this like an intervention for someone with a drinking problem. Get as many people involved as you can; his friends, family, co-workers, anyone. Get him and them at the same place at the same time, and calmly, rationally, tell him he needs help, and everyone agrees. dragging him to help isn't an option, and you don't want to wait till it becomes a court order. In other words, you need strength in numbers.

Another thought is to see if there's a support group for people with mental illnesses in your area - maybe he'd accept that better than therapy, and the others there might be able to convince him to get help.
