Does anyone else spend a considerable amount of time in daydreams? Apart from my times on antipsychotics (which have always made me completely unable to daydream) I daydream a lot - particularly as a sleep aid in bed because they really relax me, or whilst travelling somewhere. What is really strange about my daydreams is that they are not about nice things and the less nice they are, the more I can really get into them as an alternative reality. For example, I often have dreams in which I get hurt really badly, or have a very severe depressive breakdowns. At the end of most daydreams everything turns out OK (not always), but I lose interest in them very quickly after that or even before.

I have done this since I was a very young child - sometimes it would be me getting hurt, sometimes people I love (friends but never family), sometimes me hurting people I love. I have certain set dreams that I do over and over again, like the one where I jump out the window at work, or the one where the building collapses with me underneath. Often there is a love interest - someone who I fancy is involved in helping me or me them, and at the end I end up with them, but the dream is boring by this time. I remember when I was about 6 or 7 daydreaming about torturing in turn each of my teachers and then rescuing them (from myself), even though I liked them all and would never have considered doing these things in real life. Isnt it a bit weird to be daydreaming such horrible things and finding them relaxing? Does anyone else do this?

Funny thing - I'm daydreaming much less now that I'm on antipsychotics. My thought patterns have also changed - I'm thinking less in feeling and more in words.

Edit: But not to go off on a tangent, mine would constitute a nice place, peaceful and green, with a waterfall (I can even hear it). Me alone. My head is my refuge.

I've constructed really elaborate dreamworlds.

Daring to dream during the day topic

They sound like imaginary mind videos. I have always been able to do this, too. Better to keep the bad stuff in your head and not make it real! I never censor my mind. This is why we have imagination. What goes on in there stays in there, so no harm done!

No need to worry, merrymadscientist. Besides, your dreams described here had a happy ending! :)

Fire agate. Light up my pet rock!

I do that a lot. I don't know if it's so much daydreaming - it's not the typical imagining yourself in a situation, etc., though I do that as well - as, well, getting focused on something that I am thinking about, that is completely unrelated to anything I am doing at the time.
For instance, I'll tune out of an entire class just thinking about topics as diverse as "what am I going to do this weekend" or "gosh, I wonder if 13-cis-retinoic acid would be a good treatment for JMML leukemia".

Imaginary mind videos--I like that. Yes, I do that, especially when alone and listening to music. When I was younger I used it as a coping mechanism. I think that it in some ways kept me from going around the bend to full-blown insanity. I had (still have) a running story in my mind. No, I haven't written any of it down, and probably won't. It's private.

Why is it ok for people to spend hours watching fictional people on TV and get obsessed with their lives when making up your own private video or sitcome is considered unhealthy?

Do they have medication for that? I find it does preoccupy my time. The only time I stopped daydreaming was when they had me on Ritalin. I wonder if there's ways you can control it.

When I'm not at the computer or working on something of interest, perhaps 75% of my time is spent daydreaming, if not considerably more.

I can't control it, even when I'm trying to pay attention to someone or something. The only time I "snap out of it" is if I'm extremely interested in the subject being talked about. My memory of conversations I had is poor as a result of this, but it's not much of a problem when reading everything as text on a computer.

I like to daydream about projects I want to build, role playing games I want to make, replay scenes favorite movies in my head, envision post apocalyptic landscapes, create imaginary worlds and explore them... among other things.

I am especially amused imagining what the creatures of this planet might look 200 million years from now.

Now if I could prevent myself from daydreaming all the time, I'd be a better listener.

I like to daydream about my favorite anime/videogame characters. I like creating new histories and roles for them; "AU" as they say in fanfiction. I imagine all my favorite characters from different series interacting amongst themselves and with me, and I pretend it's an actual show on television, and make up videogames and soundtracks to go along with it.

I like daydreaming about post-apocalyptic scenery as well - every now and then it pops into my head.

I spend a lot of time daydreaming...but I find that when I do so, I come up with some great ideas...so it's not as useless and disruptive as people say!
