My wife called the autism hotline in Australia as she thinks i'm being a hypocondriac about AS. The person on the line said that people with AS often have panic attacks after eating too much bread or milk. Now I used to drink lots of milk all through until my early twenties and I it would sometimes trigger an asthma attack, but thats about as far as it goes.

Does anybody here, know anything about that?

Also, the description that the lady gave my wife of AS seemed to be completely different to everything i've read. Saying I should be a lot more squinty (as in squint my eyes and open them repetitively) and be agitated all the time. I don't get squinty at all, but I am very restless, as I tap a lot and look around the room a lot unless there is a tv or something to focus on.

hrmmm

Milk has casein and bread has wheat gluten. Some people with autism symptoms are actually intolerant or allergic to these two proteins. I've never had a problem with them, either. Look up the GF/CF (gluten free/casein free) diets. I've seen posts on other forums that say 30%-50% of children with autism symptoms improve on a GF/CF diet. I think it's part of what Jenny McCarthy did for her son.

I don't know but coincidentally I am right now eating a bowl of cheerios with milk. I feel fine. And deeply autistic.

Oooo....correlation? Of course, I was autistic before this bowl of cheerios and I'll likely be afterward too.
I'll keep you posted.

I plan on having gluten enhanced toast with casein margarine for breakfast. If I had only known......

If the Cheerios cure you, let us know, ok?

Cheerios. HA!

I agree. I thought as it is a neurological syndrome, your diet wouldn't have too much affect on you outside of how it would normally affect anyone. But it was something that the woman on the hotline told my wife as a basis to see if i have AS or not. I thought it was weird, and didn't agree until I remembered that milk used to make my asthma worse, so I thought i would see if anyone else had any ideas or felt anything.

I've read of this 'theory' and if it helps, fine. But....this is not recognized as a treatment, unless perhaps in tandem with other therapeutics. Usually, from what I've read, this dietary modification is indicated for children, but not necessarily.

About being ill from eating bread &/or milk - understandable; and food allergies abound. There is a mild correlation between autism and PID (primary immuno deficieny), which is accountable for the fact that so many autistics do have allergies (of all kinds). Myself, I do have allergies and I'm violently allergic to shellfish.

Anyway, I had my cereal and I'm still raging autistic sick. I am reminded about my academic mentor relating: "All those adults who eat carrots will be dead within 100 years." So true.....It's fatal.

If altering your diet, or any other doable part of your lifestyle makes you feel better and is healthful - do it. But cure? I think not.

Excuse me, but did you say autism hotline? That's just too funny!!

I-800-meltdown

Autistic: Hello, is this Dr. Phil? I'm stimming and it won't stop.....glittery reflective spinning objects.....I've counted as high as I can....

hotline: Just step away from the electrical outlet. Don't do anything rash. I'll talk you through it. And for god's sakes don't touch that gluten!! ! Just don't do it.

I have certainly never had a panic attack after eating bread or milk. Or ever, for that matter. I am kind of squinty and agitated though...! :(

My experience with my son was that he did have many asthma attacks while he drank milk...he also had many meltdowns...Once I took away milk, his asthma attacks have been greatly reduced (close to 0 per year) and his meltdowns also were greatly reduced. However, these were not reduced because after having one glass of milk he had a meltdown...and once he didn't have milk he didn't have one, it took about 3-4 days of completely removing cassein (the milk protein) from his diet to start noticing that he was no longer having the meltdowns...The same thing happened with the asthma attacks. If he has one slice of cheese, he's ok...he doesn't immediately get an asthma attack...but if he eats cheese a couple of days in a row, he will start having allergies and in turn, he ends up with asthma. His stims and lack of eye contact, social skills, etc...greatly improved after removing ALL gluten for a couple of weeks...again, after about 4-6 days I start noticing a pattern/difference...but it takes about 2 weeks to see a considerable difference...

When he began on the diet, I also gave him probiotics...and vitamins...it seems that his reaction to both of these proteins is much milder now after being on probiotics for about 1 1/2 years...but too much of it, and all the same symptoms come back.

Sadly, it's hard to convince my family of the wonderful benefits...I just left him with my mom and came to find my son had gained quite alot of weight...he's not overweight, but I can see he gained some weight...grandma of course fed him as much gluten/cassein as anyone else if not more...between the sandwiches, pizza, candies, etc...well, you get the picture...

It's very expensive where I live to follow this diet, but hopefully in the next couple of months, I will begin the diet again once I move and even try it for myself...

When I was first diagnosed with Aspergers in 1997, one of the first treatments that was mooted amongst the initial information I came across was the gluten free diet. Never been an issue for me either - ditto the cassein. About the only thing my mother did different with the bread was that she cut sandwiches into triangles instead of squares just to make sure we ate our crusts (and she buttered the bread right to the edge as well - a habit I picked up). With milk I drank it, but not voraciously. I preferred soft drink. Still do.

I haven't noticed anything, of that sort.

Not necessarily connected, but it does happen.

I drank milk in the morning and the evenings for the first 10 years of my life and I was not allergic/no intolerance either nor had the milk any worsening effect on me.

I imagine food allergies can have a devastating effect on anybody, including autistic kids and adults, especially if nobody notices the food allergy for years due to autistic behaviour and communication problems that may only increase and make things even more complicated.

Lol I am having cocorice right now with a huge bowl of milk, which I will drink when it becomes chocolatized. But as much as I would like to think so, I am not everybody and thus I should not base this based on myself alone

It probably does have an effect on other people. If you were mildly intolerant even, it would cause strange sensations which could make someone seem worse than they are. If that makes any sense.
