While I was in the process of being tested and later Dxed with Asperger's I had been repeatedly asked by therapists, et al if I had any relatives who have Asperger's or Aspie traits. Answer: Yes. 1)My uncle on my mother's side definitely. Everyone except him thinks that he is an Aspie, but doesn't know it. 2)My grandmother on my mother's side has some traits, but probably isn't an Aspie. 3)My older brother came to believe that he had Asperger's. Initially I was skeptical, but a therapist confirmed it and I came to believe that he is an Aspie too.

Anywhere there does seem to be reasonable groups for Asperger's syndrome and Autism to be genetic in nature, so I decided to pose the question:

Do you have family members who have Aspeger's Syndrome or Autism or you think do or have traits of these disorders?

None officially, though a few males on my dad's side could have been when they were alive.

My cousin acts very much like he has some sort of autism. Our whole family knows this and thinks he has it. His mom acts like there's nothing wrong with him even though he had to get home schooled and now is having more problems. He's now 20 and I think he's starting to recognise this. He's talked to me a few times about how hard life is for him. I get worried when he says that. My uncle is also very quiet but he manages to meet ppl, I guess he's just introverted.

It didn't "exist" before the mid 1990s, but I have enough family history to trace it back five generations in my paternal line.

I have an cousin in law who I don't know well at all how I believe has AS, but don't quote me on that, I haven't seen that part of the family in about 3-4 years.

Maybe.

My dad had a cousin who might have had it. This man had college degrees and IIRC, a penchant for being able to repair radios(among other skills I don't recall at the moment), yet couldn't even dress himself. My dad described him as an extremely literal thinker with no common sense. This was in the 1960s when my dad met him, well before Aspergers was in the DSM or similar, and my dad has never heard anything of this man since.

I wish I knew more.

My father passed it down. Whilst he functions too well to be given a label with "disorder" attached, he had the usual narrow interest, which he'd devote all of his time to, and he lacked many nonverbal social cues (he never made eye contact). Emotionally immature, rigid thinking, etcetera.

I got it in the more severe form.

Both of my sisters have traits (and Alice will probably be diagnosed with ADHD or something similar, she's definitely not autistic, but definitely not normal), although interestingly my brother doesn't. Both of my parents think they have traits too - mum probably OCD in my opinion though. Dad has lots of traits though - at the moment he's obsessed with Runescape and we pretty much haven't seen him for two years because he spends all his time at home on the computer, but he's also very insensitive about stuff (is that just a male thing?), and can really fly off the handle.

Don't know about the wider family, I don't really know any of them that much. I think mum thinks my auntie Rachel has something, but she's very similar to Alice. Plus, she had measles or something when she was a kid that led to a period of pschocitic (bleh, I can't spell any more) stuffs. When I was at my grandma's a couple of Easters ago and had to ask for a pair of scissors to cut the label off the back of a shirt she told me that after she was ill, she'd had to cut all the labels out of Rachel's clothes because she thought they were hairy cattapillas coming to get her! XD

A cousin, an uncle with definite traits but a bit borderline, a grandfather who definitely would have been diagnosed (he died about 10 years ago though sadly), a brother who is borderline, and another brother with a different anxiety disorder who is showing more and more AS traits as he gets older. My mother works in the field though so none of us kids have bothered with a 'written on paper' diagnosis.

I am not sure. I tend to see traits in my mother's side of the family, but they also posses traits that are quite the opposite of autistic symptoms. It would be awesome to know, especially since I still consider that ADHD might as well run in the family instead of autism, but it's yet to be seen whether I'll ever be sure.

No, but I can clearly see ADHD and OCD in some close family members. On top of NVLD, I have ADD but that's it.

None officially

My father's father is suspected by many of having AS. But I'm not really certain of this, and there's nobody else in either side of my family who seems to share my traits.

Dad is a stereotype Aspie,as is his brother, sister is on the spectrum and is closest to aspie level, dads other brother has a teenage son with classic Autism, although is HF [both he and am are the only ones diagnosed,as far as am know]-one of his other children has mental retardation and learning difficulties and he has had two children die from terminal disabilities.
Mum thinks the Autism and AS comes from her family, she thinks her sister has AS and thinks her son has some form of Autism.
