I figured everyone would want to be aware of this. My response on Next Gen:

Quote:

It could well be truth that people who like games tend to be closer to the Autism Spectrum than those don't. I'd also guess the same would be true for people who prefer reading, or watching favorite shows or movies over random socializing.

However, neuroticism is *NOT* a symptom of Asperger's, and when they would make a claim like that it makes any further claims extremely suspect. It isn't even true that people with Asperger's are introverted (as if there's something wrong with that), as not all are. 'Lack of agreeableness' isn't even a condition. What is that supposed to mean?

Basically these people are extremely suspect.

Probably not the greatest response, but it just made me mad hearing Asperger's associated with neuroticism.

Nothing is more destructive then a poor use of language(and people not trained to identify it when it occurs)

Neurotic....does this mean my neurology is "exotic" ie in the minority and unfamiliar to the user of said word?

Disagreeable...does this mean that I do not agree with people when they are wrong or I see flaws in their logic or pretend I agree with them so they will like me and I will be excepted into some group?

I plead guilty to both...I like Resident Evil 1,Silent Hill 1, but I prefer reading.

I don't think you said anything incorrect or stuipid or wrong.

Just more nonscience posing as sciene...it would be laughable if it weren't so fricken scary that these people received money.

Did they stop to consider that the mathmaticians, engineers, etc, maybe unDXed aspies?Or the individual who they interviewed who were gamers, yeah,I know,if you don't have a DX you are not AS.(like germs didn't "exist" until some one invented a machine to see them)

Once again, the autism is a disease model, rules the day.....and that is what really makes me "sick".

As Sir Percival (Percy) Blakeney* would say: "That's fish, m'dear."

I'm actually fairly extroverted (which, of course, does not mean I socialize well... though I am a good deal better than I was) and, apparently, likable/agreeable. And one counterexample is enough to disprove a general "all X are Y" statement. Which, of course, means that the researcher people are wrong.

* I recently watched the 1982 made-for-TV film adaptation of The Scarlet Pimpernel. It was surprisingly good.

Many games just might happen to be one the modern world's most popular solitary activities. That's something that draws aspies...

Researchers aren't claiming that game addicts have Asperger's, rather the addicts "share some of the same characteristics because they find it easier to empathize with computer systems than other people."

people who showed more signs of games addiction exhibit the following personality traits: neuroticism, lack of extraversion and lack of agreeableness.

The article must be referring to 3 of the "Big 5" personality traits

Introversion vs. Extroversion
Laid-back vs. Conscientious
Tactless honesty vs. Agreeableness
Traditionalism vs. Openness to Novelty
Emotional Stability vs. Neuroticism

What the article is referring to by "lack of agreeableness" is the aspie tendency towards brutal honesty, which other's interpret as tactlessness. Neuroticism is probably a reference to aspie sensory overloads and meltdowns.

IMO the popular definitions of introversion and extroversion are a bit off, at least based on some brain stuff I've read. Being an introvert doesn't necessarily mean one is a shy loner and being an extrovert doesn't necessarily mean one is a social butterfly. introversion and extroversion seem to be associated with a network of neurons in the brain stem called the Reticular Activating System, or RAS. the RAS regulates the flow of sensory information going up into the cortex. People with an a RAS that is more active then average seek out more sensory input, which often but not always includes social interaction, and thus are extroverts; while people with a RAS that is less active then average try to minimize sensory input to keep from getting sensory overload, and are thus introverts.

Liking to play games does not necessarily make you a gamer. :)
I dated a gamer and while he was not AS (far too good socially), he had a lot of traits. Also, half of his friends are Aspergian.

I think when they say tendency to play games is a trait of AS they are talking about the people who spend a huge amount of time on the games, instead of casually playing in their free time. Like said earlier in the thread, gaming is a solitary activity with little motor coordination required, and socializing if you play online is only talking through a mic or typing on a keyboard, as well as avoiding sensory overloads is easier if you are just sitting there playing a computer game. Definently can be very tempting for any Aspie over worrying about the real world.
