What is meant by repeated rote phrases?

Would saying the phrase "the bears" over and over when in a social situation, where one feels uncomfortable or nervous, be consider a repeated rote phrase.

Just phrases you say all the time... little things you go to. I don't think everyone has them... I do...but they change often.

Saying "the Bears" often would be a rote phrase... but it doesn't have to be because you are nervous. In fact, I find I go to them when I am most comfortable.

Actually I say "the Bears" just like Chris Farley from that Saturday Night Live sketch... superfans I think. It makes me laugh instantly whenever I remember it... just go "the bears, the bears, the bears..... the bears, the bears, the bears."

I say "no problem."

I also like to add superfluous plurals... for comedic effect.

After someone says something slightly condescending, I like to say "yeah you're probably right"... ala the HomestarRunner. I'm agreeing with them... but I am agreeing with stupidity... takes the edge off the comment.

There are others...but I can't really think of them right now for some reason. They just pop out in conversation...

A rote phrase is an over-learned phrase. For instance, most people, when greeting another person, say "How are you?" even if they do not mean it, because it's a rote, overlearned phrase one uses in that situation. For people with disorders, it can reduce cognitive load (reduce the strain on the person) when they have things already memorized that they can say. I imagine that social skills training sometimes involves the learning of rote phrases that one can use in certain situations. Learning rote phrases to use can be helpful for people with language disorders, like aphasia or people with pragmatic difficulties who don't know how to communicate appropriately. For instance, you might teach a kid a particular greeting ritual, or even practice small conversations ("scripts"). Practicing rote phrases is also helpful for people with apraxia of speech, because the more automatic a phrase becomes, the easier it will be for them to say.

I say thank you way too much and when it is not an appropriate response.
For example I will sometimes say thank you when I mean to say good bye or your welcome.

I knew someone with autism in highschool that would say "Oh nooooooooooo, wait a minute the entire school year". He also stripped down to his newborn clothes a couple of times in front of the class to change his clothes. Very sad.

Some of my favorite rote phrases are:
"You can't trust him as far as you can throw him".
"If you've seen one you've seen them all".
"He is a good cat, he makes mistakes, but we all do" when around my cat Sassafras with my wife.

Starting every spoken sentence with the word "So...". Sucks when I realized it but still do it.

Someone else has already said it best. So if you can't top it, steal from them and go out strong.
My speech used to be littered with quotes, mostly pop-culture stuff, but not all. I'm better at making up my own thoughts now, but it's still good to be able to fall back on what other people have said, sometimes.

When nearly your entire life's dialogue consists of movie, song lyric, and book quotes, is there a problem?

My husband and I both do this BTW. We are so predictable to each other and know each other so well, that we now usually know which rote phrase or song will pop into the others' head. We share the same brain I think.

I don't think anyone (student or teacher) would want to attempt to stop him. He had the strength of an ox. He one time picked up a teacher with one head by their shirt against the wall.

I play an online video game, MMORPG called Final Fantasy XI. I find myself using phrases from there a lot. "orz" and "pwned!" come to mind immediately. And "OMGWTFSHEEPORZ" which is an exclamation I used once, and then kind of got stuck on. It's like my "Holy s**t!"

Other than that, I use quotes from cartoons a lot. Futurama, Family Guy and ATHF being the first to come to mind. Oh, and Star Wars. "That's no ____, it's a space station!" and "Those aren't the droids you're looking for."

My husband also does that, and we've had entire conversations that were nothing but quotes from things, or a recitation of an entire scene. The thing is, we get SO much more out of those conversations than you'd expect. It's actually a very deep form of sharing for us. It makes us both really really happy and amused, moreso than whatever it is we're quoting from originally.

I've had many phrases that I've gotten stuck on. A popular one right now is the phrase so often said in House (the TV show): "It could be lupus." I offer that whenever anyone is speculating the cause of something. Like, "Why are there dirty spoons in the dish drainer...?" "It could be lupus!"

When Im in sad, in trouble, embarrased or generally uncomfortable, I whisper very softly to myself the words "Please.." usually with my eyes closed and my head bowed.

Sometimes its

"am I a bad person?"
"ma? .."
"you're a f_____g weirdo, you know that?"

Almost always these words when Im stressed or depressed.
