Much has been made of "gut feeling" in terms of problems and similar situations.

It made me wonder: Which do you trust more: thinking something over/analyzing the problem, or the "gut feeling" that you may or may not get over the issue?

I use a mixture of both, personally, with a weight on feeling.

Thinking/analysis. My gut feeling is usually right but I habitually double check it. I pretty much never go on just a gut feeling.

A mixture of both. If it is something I care about such as something relating to a special interest, I will use analysis. If it is something stupid that bores me like a question on a quiz for my Government class... I will use my gut feeling/guess.

A mix of both. I think that's better and more balanced than relying solely on one or the other.

This is how I make decisions:

1. Analyze the situation and determine the solution(s) most likely to result in a favorable outcome based on current knowledge. If there is a single best solution, stop here. If not, proceed.

2. When presented with multiple options that are equally likely to produce a favorable outcome based on analysis, turn to other sources of in-put: write about it, meditate on it, and seek the experience or advice or others when possible.

3. Go for a long walk, and let your mind wander until a gut feeling emerges. Then compare the gut feeling to the above information and determine if it is supported by logic. If it is logical, choose that option.

Actually, when I analyze a gut feeling of mine, it always turns out to be very logical. So in my case, there might not be much of a difference between the two. However, I would say that logic is my Plan A and instinct is my Plan B / Tie Breaker.

Both. I'm incapable of having "gut feelings" without thinking/analysis first.

I always think about my gut feeling before acting on it. Being impulsive is not a strong suit of mine.

The gut feeling gesture is something a schizophrenic does.

I analyze things, but I've found that I tend to second guess my analyses, or get distracted by details and go completely the wrong direction on a routine basis. If I just trust my gut feelings and stick with them, I usually get things right. So I'd say I trust my gut more than my analysis... Probably because I try to take too many factors into account and that goofs things up.

Yeah, breathing, eating, and sleeping is something a schizophrenic does too.

The two voices inside my head always take different opinions. After having a serious argument, they stop talking to each other for a while, so I have to rely on thinking and analysis.

Being serious, gut feeling is sometimes helpful in a situation where I really don't have a clue what to do. But if I'm faced with a situation which is similar to one I've been in before, my brain takes over. Sometimes it gets it right.

Maybe, but that's not to say gut-feelings are peculiar to the schizophrenic. Everyone has some level of intuition, not just the mentally ill.

I do both and they are often in a tug of war with each other.

I have to rely on heavy analysis where intuition fails me. Such as in how to behave with certain people or in certain situations.

I've always relied heavily on observation. Even when I have these so called "gut feelings", I've found that I can always trace the feeling back to some little thing I observed and just put into the back of my mind. It's like my sub-concious is working on a problem without explaining every detail to me. I think that's what alot of intuition may be. If that's true, then intuition may contain logic that you just don't remember using. I only act on intuition alone if I'm forced to make a quick decision about something. Otherwise I'm much more comfortable proving my intuition correct by doing more observing, then thinking and analysing. One part of my mind likes to use shortcuts, the other part insists to be shown the work step by step.

So...both I guess.
