So Aspies really can't tell ANY emotions from faces?

If AS means not being able to detect the emotional state of others, count me out then, because even though I have difficulty empathizing and relating emotionally even to my wife and kids, I can tell how they're feeling. When my toddler son cries out of true sadness, my heart breaks. When someone's angry at me, I can pick that up (usually). Happiness? I'm all about it and I love seeing it in others.

Everyone is different, don't count yourself out just because one thing doesn't match.

I can read faces to a degree.

It's probably more evident as a child, i.e., a child with AS will be oblivious to another's distress.

I can tell when someone is smiling, afraid, angry, etcetera; I usually instinctively laugh at such, but I know what they mean. In other words, I have an inappropriate response to such, but through pattern recognition, I know what a "smile" looks like (this is the adaptive behavior they talk about).

There's usually an impairment in this kind of skill, but it more often than not isn't completely gone in people with AS.

I took a test online to see how good I am at reading faces. I scored above average. I just find it more difficult to read people in real life situations. Partly because I don't look at people often.

From what I've read the typical Aspie can read the most basic emotions while having some difficulty reading more subtle ones. I can read most emotions, but I have some difficulty telling different levels of anger, laughing and crying look and sound alike to me at first, and some facial expressions such as haughtiness and jealousy are usually lost on me.

I can tell what someone's feeling if it's more obvious. But sometimes the subtle things get by me entirely. I actually don't like using the little face things in my posts ( ) because they don't look to me like the things they're supposed to look like. I prefer things like : D and : ) that I can more easily understand. I wish everyone had one face for angry, and one for happy, and one for sad, and that everyone's was the same. :D

From what I understand, most aspies understand obvious emotions like anger, sadness, happiness, but it's the more subtle emotions that they struggle with. I generally recognize facial expressions, but I do struggle sometimes and I have a habit of thinking the worst - like that someone doesn't like me because they didn't smile big enough, or they are angry because they didn't smile at all. Then I wonder what I have done wrong, and maybe the person didn't mean anything by it or I have misread their expression. It is harder for sure.

I have great difficulty reading faces, unless it's a smile, and even then I can't tell genuine smiles from forced ones.

I have trouble making the right facial expression. Somehow, my face just doesn't react to emotions normally. Reading other people's expressions is easy, but I probably do miss a lot of the subtler things.

I don't smile unless I'm very happy. People always think I'm sad, even though I usually have a neutral expression :S

I can tell happy, and sad, and I can tell surprised-or-scared (but not which one of those two it is). Sometimes I can tell anger (it depends on how "typical" it is, i.e., how close it looks to what I'd see in a movie or illustration). Other than that, I can't really tell. I took the Faces Test, and that's how it came out there as well. So I can read the most basic emotions, but none of the subtle or even slightly less common ones (contented? sheepish? huh?)
As with previous posters, I also don't always have the right facial expression - it's blank when it shouldn't be, or looks different from the way it ought to look.
