Many Aspies switch between a few interests in the same manner as switching TV channels. Mine are things like old cars, firearms, Limbaugh, antiques, and maybe a few more things. Do any fellow Aspie rednecks get irritated when people say you should "brush up" on pop culture or become more "cosmopolitan"? It takes effort on my part to not respond to such questions with a pop in the nose.

Of course, what would REALLY be fun is to ask "Is that cosmopolitan enough for ya'?" after the pop in the nose.

My interests remain pretty stable and 1959 is the year of my birth. You're right to keep doing what you do. Do you like Sig Sauers?

I prefer antiques like old SWs. Also, nickel plating trips my trigger (pun intended).
I wasn't born in 1959; 1959 is my favorite vehicle year.

All my S&W's are 1987 or newer. I do have a 1978 Colt DS in pristine condition (120 rds total, no cylinder ring). :D

I love electronic music from the 80s. That's why iTunes will never help me, they only have the modern stuff.

Are you talking "Switched on Bach", the group Kraftwerk or what?

I've never imagined such a thing as an aspie redneck. My interests are living within the city limits of a major American urban center, driving my hybrid Prius or Volvo to and from my work as an endangered shrimp activist, checking out the organic vegetables at the local co-op or farmer's market (I am vegan, thank you very much!), sipping on a non-dairy latte from Starbucks, reading the latest from the Brookings Institution, keeping up to date on the news with The New York Times, enjoying the symphony or opera, associating with my gender-queer and intersexed friends, chatting with Osama (yeah, that one), protesting wars, and writing poetry.

Shrimp activist? They are not even sentient, with such a rudimentary nervous system. I do not think a shrimp can suffer a lot of pain.

You mean to say you "chat" with Osama bin Ladin? That's scary.

Do your friends just happen to be intersexed or do you seek out intersexed friends to the exclusion of full males / full females?

Very interesting! Definitely not an Aspie redneck, although my neck is kind of red compared to yours ...

redkneck Aspies are cool. I can sympathize with you in one way in that I am an Aspie who is not a hippie.

I'm the kind of person that seems like a redneck among non-rednecks but does not pass muster with the true rednecks. They'll never accept me because I don't eat meat and I've never gone hunting or four-wheeling. They wouldn't even let me go ice fishing because they thought I'd whine about being cold (which was probably an accurate assumption). Redneck girls are supposed to be real tough and real feminine at the same time - I'm weak and androgynous.

However, I do enjoy classic country music, shooting beer cans with a variety of firearms, drinking cheap beer, sitting around a bonfire and bitching about the big bad government, playing pool at dive bars, old cars and pick-up trucks, fishing, taxidermy . . . You know, the stuff that makes you seem like a redneck if you live in the city but is taken for granted as normal in the country.

I went through that phase in high school. I am neither a redneck nor a hippie at the current time.

"Yuppie" and "redneck" are at opposite ends of the spectrum of sophistication. Christian Bale's character in American Psycho was a textbook 80's yuppie. The Beverly Hilbillies were not hippies but rednecks. Jex Foxworthy has made a nice little career for himself talking about uneducated folk from the Southern US who fall into the redneck category. The hippies of the 1960's were not necessarily uncouth, uneducated, or unsophisticated. Naw, the people who marched on Vietnam were probably really smart.

Walter/Wendy Carlos and Kraftwerk were pretty much from the late 60's on through to the late 70's. Also, FWIW, I have a German Radio Broadcast bootleg of Kraftwerk playing live, and on that were about as high in the the mix as typical of the era British hard rock like Robin Trower, Hawkwind, and Deep Purple.

Also, FWIW, I'm not particularly into guns, dislike Right Wing talk radio, or rather talk radio in general. OTOH, I've always worked on my own cars when I've had them, save for the times when I've needed repairs beyond the scope of the typical 200 piece socket/ spanner set. --I've learned over time to loathe German cars because of the proprietary tools needed to service them.

I currently live in the south, and have no issues with rednecks at all, if they keep their religion and their right wing politics to themselves, they're entitled to their opinions as far s I'm concerned. OTOH, I cannot tolerate being around trailer trash.
