Who here hates being a savant? My "power", if it can be called such, is well, thought, to put it bluntly. Rather, manner of thought - of reaching conlcusions.
Any question scientific, say, on physics or other such - no issue, no problem.
No challenge.

I'll admit; being a savant does have it's advantages - but where is the struggle and triumph?
Don't you hate having the answer just, well, manifest itself within your head - not even seconds after asking a question?
It's useful, yes - but insanely boring.

Have you ever NOT known the answer to a scientific question?

Has there been a time when the correct answer did not "manifest itself" in your head?

Are you actually a bona fide savant? If so, I must confess that I respect and somewhat envy you. Most things have always come easy to me, but my skills have never been at a savant level. I have to work things out manually, even the easy things, and answers don't always just pop into my head.

Felinity; I can honestly say that I haven't ever not known the answer. It always manifests itself (I really should think of another way to put that) in my head. That's my point; I can't stand that.
If there was an occasion that such did not happen - I would likely be in a state of euphoria. At least, for a brief moment.
and Warsie - my definition of savant is rather a play on idiot savant; ability save idiocy.
Oh, Orwell - as I said, yes being savant has it's uses, and I would be lying if I said I didn't exploit it, regardless I'd rather have the knowledge that I worked it out on my own, that my theories and ideas are a full result of my personality. Granted; my interests lead me to initiate - but, the result? Can it truly be said it is mine and not result of my physiology?

Well, I suppose the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. An NT friend of mine once commented (this was before it was known that I was Aspie) that he wished he could be a savant so that he would do better on Academic Team.

If you are truly a savant...I wouldn't complain if I were you. Being bored because science is easy ranks pretty low when it comes to personal problems^.^

In any case...what truly defines a "savant?" What makes a person a savant, as opposed to talented?

Uh... foxman, I think you're missing the point. My concern is that this may not be my talent.
Besides which; I care nothing of personal issues. My chief interest is in science; therefore, with no challenge there - what purpose have I?
You may see no need for me to complain; but as Orwell said - the grass is always greener on the other side.
I've known people who envied me for my talents, if you choose to call them such, as I've envied them for not.

wrong. a savant can be an absolute idiot, but have best memory in the world... nothing to do with intelligence.

And the fact your mother doesnt understand the news, tells more about your mother than about you ;).

Jimmy, I think you are frustrated because no-one around you shares your interest as deeply as you do. You have easy access to the answers. Have you tried another interest, something that would be new and therefor challenging.

I hate being called the little professor. I don't know exactly what a savant is. I probably am one. When people compliment you, it gets to your head really quickly. You show off, without knowing it. You have the knowledge to help someone and they recieve the know-it-all snob message. You aren't even aware that they want to hear you.

I have an amazing memory of facts and events, what is called eidetic memory (popularly called "photographic" memory, but I find the label "photographic" to be misleading except in very extreme cases of eidetic memory). I can remember an event as if it was yesterday even though most people have totally forgotten about it. My factual memory gets me into trouble because I get accused of being an arrogant know-it-all.

For me savant refers to those areas that are surprisingly easy to do well in compared with other area where one does well but it takes more work. I can draw a free hand map of the world and most countries you could name. It just happens. I don't do any sort of map or geography related work but am good at what I do (technical/science). Being able to compare the two processes from inside makes it clear that that there is a difference between garden-variety intelligence and savant abilities.

Oh, and when I have allowed myself to draw a map on the spot when needed, there have been more than a few stares and "I'm a little creeped-out" expressions on the faces looking back at me from people who know me and have worked with me.

So I don't hate this "savantism" but I do handle it and display it with some care.

The "creeped-out" reaction doesn't help much in social interaction. I have a photographic memory and ecolalia. When I combine the two into my sense of dry, quirky humour i.e. a, given the current situation, ironic quote from a movie that EVERYONE saw last week, people go into shock. (I just realize how weird that must be). I have learned to tone down a bit in order not to be a know-it-all, it's just that my brain is a sponge for useless information and my idea of socialising is sharing it.

My IQ score says high genius but I don't feel it and feel generally like a failure. I've read that some L-F Autistic children hit their head against a wall because of a lack of stimulation.
