I have very rare form of aspergers where i was naturally able to understand social cues but ignore them if chose. Unforturnately being stuck on med wrecked it. ANyone here born with this ability?

I pick up a lot (most I think), but there are some I can give a fake half-response to "I'm sorry to hear that", or "well, congratulations", and others I sorta sense, but just can't muster the required reaction. I cannot bring myself to give even a polite fake laugh at a joke that I recognize as an attempt at humor, but simply don't find funny. If a coworker wins the lottery, I'm not jealous, but if they expect a high-five and a lot of whooping and hollering, they're with the wrong person.

It's not that I don't see the social cues (or that I don't have a well-developed sense of humor), so much as I just fail to have the automatic response to them that NTs have.

If you're able to read the social clues, the I'd say you probably have ADD rather than Asperger's.

Thank you, Doctor, but the word is CUES, not clues, and spectrum means wide range, indicating that not all ON THE SPECTRUM will exhibit IDENTICAL behaviors and symptoms. Someone with an attention DEFICIT would in all likelihood be less able to pick up on subtle cues, because of their inability to focus long enough.

hmm, I think that was a little harsh; you could have disagreed politely and stated your reasons without sarcasm.

I think that your case is very interesting :D did the Psychologists give you a term for this form of Asperger's?

If you've only previously had this ability, have you considered that chance that you may have exaggerated this phenomenon? I'm not trying to start a fight, but looking back at my own childhood, I've found that other people's perceptions have not exactly lined up with my own. I was far less social than I have seen myself to be. Just a thought.

I was not born with that ability. I acquired it through learning. Who here came out of the womb with an understanding of social cues?

no. the way it was before was like i had a invisible shield around me. I detected social cues but was not affected by them and could choose how to react. no the invisible shield is gone, now it more like i get them unthinkingly,
and cant choose how to react. so it started off that i was even better than nts.

How were you better than NTs?
