*takes deep breath* I was diagnosed with asperger’s at the end of last year. My parents had never even heard of it before, so they were surprised when the councilor they took me to informed them that I was a ‘classic case of asperger’s’. Mom thought it was ‘cool’, but my dad sort of went into this state of denial. I myself really didn’t start researching it until a few weeks ago. That’s when I found this site and started reading every single thread. I practically combed through the whole entire site before I came to the realization that asperger’s really does describe me down to a t. So I was just wondering…do you guys have any tips…or advice or whatever? I still have tons of questions…but I don’t really know who to ask. I figured this site was a pretty good place to start. So yeah. *lets out a sigh of relief* Skwee! I can’t believe I actually wrote all that. *Hides behind trusty muses once more and eats welcome casserole she received from Labpet*

I suggest that you establish a garden of medical and culinary herbs.

the grand thing about WP is.... you don't have to know who to ask... have a general question? just post a topic... someone out of the 1500 or so online at any given time will answer....

and a really good thing to do is to browse the old topics... a lot of new people repeat old topics (not that anyone here really minds i don't think)... but there are a lot of really nice posts in the old pages...

so welcome to WP.... here have some not-from concentrate kosher grape juice with that casserole.... and good luck....

I am scared to tell my family it is possible I can have it but I know they already love me lots and will love me no matter what.
I may not need a formal diagnoses though. I would like to know if I have it or not.

Your dad's probably in a state of denial because he doesn't understand what AS is. A lot of parents and authority figures see it as a disease or a personality flaw, which it really isn't, but because it's considered a "syndrome" and a form of autism, it has that reputation.
So just as a piece of advice, it's probably best not to reveal the fact that you have AS to anyone outside of the AS community (or even most people in the AS community) because I've learned from my own and other aspies' experience that the information can and probably will somehow be used against them by people who have something against them.
And if you do reveal your diagnosis to others be certain that those other persons don't have anything against you, and do not ever by any means use your diagnosis as an excuse for immoral or irresponsible actions. Otherwise all of your negative traits and everything you've ever done wrong will be attributed to your Asperger's Syndrome by the more ignorant individuals in your life.
As for this forum, my tips are to pretty much be nice, and be careful how you phrase your responses to topics if and when you disagree with anyone, because even light-hearted playing at disagreement is taken extremely seirously by the more opinionated persons on these forums.
So, yeah, ask anything. Ask away (just be warned that a lot of serious questions could ignite an angry response from people who percieve said questions as ignorant or provocative).
And definitely feel free to talk about anything you're interested in.

I second the herbs. You should definitely grow a bunch of herbs.

angelbread22,

Just out of curiousity, what caused them to try to get you diagnosed?

Also, if you have any problems, people might be able to give advice, but you are asking a kind of open ended question.

Poke people.

No, not really.

Just... be yourself. Theres nothing you can do to change the fact you have AS. Just don't go running about and telling the whole world, cause then people expect you to be rainman and yea, thats so not us.

Welcome!

First off: welcome home.

Glad you found your way here.
Some advice:
take anthropology courses about primate behavior (helps you understand what the NTs are up to)
take acting classes
learn about body language(books, or whatever)
Don't be surprised to keep learning new things about how Aspergers affects you that you never realized before.
Ask questions here and we'll try to answer them.
Appreciate your strengths and remember that you have many Abilities that NTs don't have.
Don't be afraid to ask for accommodations for those things that are dis-abilities. You have a right to not have disabilities get in the way of learning and working.
Enjoy getting to know other people like you.
Remember that "knowing one Aspie means you know *one* Aspie" and don't assume that any other Aspie or Autist is "just like you".

Read, reflect, ask questions, repeat. ;-)

*comes out of hiding* An herb garden? That’s neat! And really ironic. I was super interested in herbs a few years back. My grandmother keeps a garden growing all year long. So it’s cool you peoples mentioned it.

I’ve only told a few people I have aspergers. Like my amazing best friends. One of whom joined up here just because she has an odd mind and likes to learn about people. Britt thinks it’s amazingly cool, and my other best friend thinks it isn’t such of a big deal. After all, I’m still me. Having a diagnoses doesn’t change all that much.

My parentals originally took me to a councilor because I didn’t really seem to fit in at school very well. I was super unorganized, I lost everything that wasn’t literally taped to my forehead, yet I aced most of my tests. So they took me to see someone about what was going on. I had always been really naïve, childish, and original. But people often teased me about my accent *shakes fist at meanie-heads*.

*eeps* And I didn’t intend to leave you guys with no idea how to answer. I was just wondering about stuff in general…

Mmmm herb garden..... no I'm not allowed herbs, I killed my last lot!

You seem to be dealing really well with most of the scariest and trickiest things - you have friends, your friends believe you and are cool with it, at least some of your family believes you, you have a diagnosis and a counselor who sounds halfway sensible, you're passing school, and you seem to have a generally optimistic attitude.. (perhaps I'm too quick about some of these things, but that's the impression I've gotten from your posts)

Find someone at your school who understands and will be on your side in case you need anything AS related.

Having your dad 'see the light' would be nice - there are articles on the net about teens with AS which your dad might like to see - the official criteria in the DSM stop making so much sense for teens and adults, esp for females, and this can be confusing and an easy way to be in denial.

There's a lot of noise being made about AS being related to gluten and casein intolerance - have a look around the research on that and decide if you want to try cutting down/giving up on them to see if it improves anything.

Other than that, unless something is going wrong in your life, there isn't really any advice to give! If you're happy, don't try to change anything :D

(I have a weird accent too - people always ask me where I'm from - the answer is HERE!)
