Hi. I am a parent with an 8 yr old AS son - high functioning, so handles maths and spelling easily. We are running into problems at school with him freezing up or refusing to do writing work which he thinks is too hard. The teacher says she is trying to encourage the kids to think more about how they write and how to be more descriptive. So, does anyone have any clues on where the difficulties lie and what might be done to help? The teacher is struggling with whether he is being naughty or not in regard to this. I am thinking that it is more likely that there is something we're missing that is annoying him and sending him into meltdown mode.

I have run into similar issues myself. Instructions given for writing are oftentimes just too nebulous. It could help to SHOW him examples of how they want him to write, and have him emulate that. That's what worked for me, because it's a little more concrete and gives you more to go off of than simply a command to "be more descriptive."

I have trouble writing if the instructions aren't specific enough

One thought may be with the teacher encouraging them to be more descriptive he may get lost in the details and not know how to start. I have this problem with a book I am struggling to write, I can recite chapter after chapter of the ideas but when I try to get it on paper I can't find a begining. And end up giving up in frustration. I don't know the subject matter the teacher is instructing him in but I would think if it a subject that would require objective descriptions he may do better

ya i'd say do some examples with him and hopefully he'll get the idea.

is it just the level of difficulty of particular writing assignments or does he have trouble writing in general? i had/have terrible handwriting... and i remember my little borther had issues holding a pencil and couldnt get comfortable.

but generally, kids don't like writing period... from what i've observed in elementary schools.

but if it's just a mental block kind of thing... try the modelling thing or give him some examples to feed off of... like don't do it for him but give him small ideas and help him expand on them
