WrongPlanet Guidelines.

WrongPlanet.net (WP) is a family friendly community designed to be appropriate for all ages. These guidelines are to ensure that WP is a positive community, and are facilitated by the Admins and Moderators. Some points need explanation and/or clarification – for the sake of brevity, these are in the next post on this thread. Any such points are marked with a letter - e.g. (a) - which refers to the notes below.

A. Behaviour.
The following behaviour is unacceptable on WP (whether actual content or links to same):

1. Offensive language and comments.
This includes swearing; racist, sexist, homophobic, etc. (a) language; behaviour intended to provoke (flaming) or belittle other members or groups of members (b); violent or sexually demeaning language or images (c). It includes harassment of any sort, of other members of WP, whether on the forums, by PM or IM, or by email, if the contact was made through WP.

2. Personal attacks.
This includes insinuation, ridicule and personal insults, regardless of whether direct or indirect. Attacking an opinion, belief or philosophy is acceptable, but attacking the person making the comments is not. “Heated debates” are also acceptable, provided this guideline is respected.

3. Incitement.
Inciting other members to, or encouraging them in, violent or aggressive behavior, suicide, racism, sexism, etc., or other behaviour which contravenes these guidelines.

4. Other inappropriate content and behavior.
This will include copyrighted material, serial codes, and posts made to promote a website, group or product, particularly if made repeatedly and without other participation in the WP community (spamming).

B. Posts and page format.
Please keep to the rules for avatar size, which can be found at the bottom of your Profile page.
Please ensure that links and pictures in posts fit the page format (d).
Posts which disrupt the page format, will be edited by the Moderators, and a PM sent to the member advising them of this.

C. Implementing the guidelines.
This is done by the Moderators. The process is as follows:

i. Reminder – For a mild or general contravention, a reminder will be posted on the relevant thread.
ii. Advisory – For a first offense, an advisory will be sent to the member by a Moderator, by private message (PM).
iii. First official warning – for a serious or second offence, sent as above. If a sincere apology is received, and the behaviour does not happen again, this warning will be lifted after one month.
iv. Second official warning – for repeated offending.
v. Third official warning – if the offence is repeated yet again.
vi. Ban – after a third warning has been issued, the member will lose posting privileges for two weeks. The member can be re-instated after this time, providing a clear understanding is reached between that member and the Moderators, that no further offenses will occur. Further offenses will result in action as decided by the Moderators.

Warnings and bans are lifted after five months have expired, for each.

Please note that these procedures apply to any warnings, whether for the same offense or a different one.
Moderators will always try to explain the offense, and what is acceptable in its place – if in doubt, please ask.
The member has the right to know what caused offence and why, and a record will be kept on the Moderators’ forum, both to keep track and avoid individual bias. There is also the right to disagree with a decision – this should also be done by PM, and not publicly.
There may be exceptions to this procedure, when the offence is serious enough to require an immediate ban. Such instances will be discussed on an individual basis.

Posts with inappropriate content, or which disrupt the page format may be edited by the Moderators. Deletions of posts/threads don't happen often but when it does, any further post which refers to the deleted post/thread or attempts to rehash the deleted post/threads will, itself, be against the TOS and removed without warning.

The roles and responsibilities of the Moderators, and how they are chosen, are in the third post on this thread, for information.

These guidelines apply to the discussion board and the WP chat room, where relevant. They also apply to PMs, if the PM is unsolicited or non-consensual.

Explanations, clarification, and definitions of the guidelines.

(a) Racism, sexism, etc. is defined as prejudice (opinion) or discrimination (action) against a person based on a characteristic over which they have no control – their race, gender, sexual orientation (homophobia), age, disability, etc. It is the use of stereotypes to define a person, or portraying them solely on the basis of that characteristic.

(b) Posts which are intended to take advantage of members, or their lack of knowledge or experience, are unacceptable, as are those which manipulate other members (including their feelings). These include “joke” threads which mislead others.

(c) This includes pornographic content; sexually/racially etc. demeaning content; images or descriptions of self-harm; images/language intended to disturb or incite. Please remember that what may be acceptable to you may not be generally acceptable on WP.

(d) To insert a long link into a post, without disrupting the page format, type [ url = http://www.???] ???? [ /url ] without the spaces, where ??? is the site address and ???? is the name you want to give it.

The Moderators.

The Moderators are chosen by consensus amongst existing Moderators. A member is put forward, and their suitability discussed by existing Moderators. (The only exception is if Alex confers Moderator status). There are no “rules” as to who may be suggested.

Matters such as advisories and warnings are decided after discussion between the Moderators, unless a course of action is absolutely clear, in accordance with the guidelines. Final decisions are by consensus. This is to prevent individual bias and errors.

Moderators contact members by PM and not publicly, in the event of a breach of the guidelines. This is out of respect for individuals’ dignity, and to prevent unnecessary bad feelings or recriminations, or public altercations.

If you feel the Moderators have missed anything which contravenes the guidelines, please let them know by PM – given the rapidly-increasing size of the site, this is an unfortunate possibility
