I read somewhere that the most disgusting symptom of Aspergers is a special interest. I wondered why.

What ever the reason was, she was right. It's because of my special interests that led to compulsive printing and hoarding. I can't help it, I just crave for information. I got in trouble for that.

Is there anyway to get rid of my interests?

That is BS, that's the best part of your diagnosis.

Have you displayed any compulsive behavior when it comes to these narrow interests?

Yes, I used to compulsively construct codes on pieces of paper while I was in high school, and nearly didn't graduate because I kept failing courses, and would then have to make them up.

Now I get paid a lot of money to compulsively construct secured systems.

I'm sorry, I have no idea what that means. Are you translating from a language other than English? "disgusting symptom"? Are you implying that all Aspies who have special interests are DISGUSTING? Or that our interests are disgusting? Or are you personally obsessed with cannibalism or scatological play or something?

The question makes no sense. If you actually read that somewhere, you need to find new informational sources. Consumption Junction is not CNN.

I think that sentence is actually quite disgusting and really quite offensive.

I am not saying I personally am offended, I am really very confused but I think using words like disgusting for developmental disorders is really very wrong.

I have spent hundreds of pounds because of my obsession but I still love it and I would never wish it away and if someone came to me and called it disgusting I would be offended...in fact someones called my collection something similar and my reaction was not pretty.

The special interest bit is what i find the most endearing quality. The interests inspire learning and makes me do things i normally wouldnt do. For instance, if i wanted to learn about something but couldnt find enough material online or in my private books id go to the library. My special interests is what keep me sane and somewhat functioning. If i didnt have these interests, id just be an empty shell sitting and staring at a wall or something.

I cant believe someone said something like this, i find it completely riddiculous and id be greatly offended if someone said something like this to me.

and I have compulsions all the time, but that's because I'm also Obsessive-Compulsive. :S Anyways, it just makes me a more colorful person. :D and in your case, I see absolutely nothing wrong with a lust for knowledge. :)

The special interests, to me, are always fun and exciting. They leave me to never be bored and to have a greater knowledge about whatever I may be obsessing over at the time. It's always a lot of fun and my friends always get into whatever I like, too. That way, we're even better friends than ever. So the special interests actually make my life better rather than worse. Think about it that way.

I love my special interests. When I'm involved in them, that's when I feel truly alive! It's like the passion and giddiness and lifeforce that I can't seem to connect with any other way comes through.

I truly hope that my passions will continue throughout my adult life and that I'll be able to incorporate them into my career.

I would be a lifeless empty shell without my 'special interests' and 'obsessions'.

I feel the same way. Unfortunately, after two years of drug and alcohol abuse, I don't really have any special interests right now, and my life is dominated mostly by anxiety. Not a good place for a (suspected) aspie to be.

Hah, admittedly my obsessions have sometimes got a little out of hand... For example, spending my entire University savings bond (about £1,500) on Sonic merchandise *grin* My room is quite the SegaSonic museum... so much rare stuff lining the walls, hehe. I love collecting stuff to do with my interests.

But I also love to talk about them and draw them and write about them and daydream about them and... yeah, they can take over my life quite a bit and sometimes it's a struggle to get on with the mundane tasks of everyday life when I'm so lost in my obsessions.

But having said that, I wouldn't trade it for the world. I love my obsessions and I love how they make me feel.

Disgusting? My obsessions are my favorite part of being an aspie. It took me a long time to figure out that NTs don't feel that same kind of joy from exploring their own interests, and don't tend to have interests they care about that deeply; when I realized that, I honestly felt sorry for them I would never give up my obsessions.

I'm sure everyone here has experience some degree of ridicule about being interested in the "wrong" things. Being "too interested" is a great social crime, so the consensus goes. Apparently, the healthy thing to do is learn one or two facts about every single subject, so as to make small talk that rapidly elides from one subject to another. Say any more, and you are labelled 'boring'.

I don't think "disgusting" is how most people would term obsessional interests. "Pathetic" or "disturbing", maybe.

Is that why NT's are so obsessed with taking endless core classes in college? After awhile I lose all patience with their 'well-rounded' crap. If they would just encourage me to specialize in computers and electronics earlier, I would learn faster and be much happier. I like learning how things work, computers and programing, music, and I'm learning Spanish from my husband. That's mostly it! I took the basic core junk in high school. At this point they are the ones being disgusting. WHat more do they want? Could someone please explain this in Aspian terms?
