Does anyone else pay special attention to road signs - just for their own sake - when driving, or when you're a passenger in a car, bus etc.? Or when they visit a new place?

With me, on any journey I'm absolutely intrigued by the signs giving directions to places, distances to places, what road numbers/destinations are on the signs etc. I have been like this my whole life. Most days I travel between Dalkeith and Edinburgh and never get bored of seeing the same road signs, which are as intriguing as ever, every day.

It's getting to the stage where, whenever I think of a place, or go to a place, it's the road signs I remember better than anything else.

I generally tend to pay attention to road signs when travelling (I don't drive yet) as it gives me an idea of where I am or how far I am from my destination and helps me remember a journey. I don't like feeling lost and paying attention to road signs takes that lost feeling away from me a little. I also look for certain landmarks on the way to somewhere as well and this gives me an idea of where I am.

Yes man keeno me and you have a lot in common. i love reading road signs, it's always interesting to see the pattern of the interstate and US route coding system, and where those routes take you. Also when im on a highway I like to read the exit signs to see where I am at and to see what towns I could go to. I also like reading the blue signs that tell you what hotels, restauraunts, gas stations, and attractions. i guess i am a visual thinker and love patterns.

I know a little bit about the American road system, numbers and so on. Maybe I can tell you some more about roads over here, the Scottish/UK road system, etc.

there are places in the USA don't have errors in the master plan of highways and numbering

California had no exit numbers at all a few years ago.

Some states still have different numbering systems for the exits,they don't match the mile post.

New York starts the I-87 exit numbers at the new york city line and the mile makers at the city line because it's where the toll system starts and than after the toll road turns west on I-90 the I-87 mile markers and exit numbers start again from 1
Exit 2 could be within New York City or just north of the city or just north of I-90

I-99 is out of order,it is between I-81 and I-79

When I was 10 I made mum go around and take photos of me next to any signs that said "When Frosty".

I know this seems really weird but around the same age.. I was trying to rashun my chips on a bus trip and said I was only allowed a chip at every second road sign.

I noticed that too, also if you go further north in PA their's a US route 62 which is totally out of alignment with the rest of the US routes

I driven on parts of it in Ohio offen and never noticed

got hundreds of photos of them on my HD. But I'm not obsessed, I swear.

After I learned to read, I would read each sign as we passed it out loud. I still read nearly every road sign I pass. I have trouble finding the white speed limit signs and I wonder if it is because it’s white. The yellow, green and blue signs all jump out at me. I know what all the different colors indicate as well as all the different shapes meanings. I am uncomfortable when vehicles block my view of road signs. I take pictures of funny signs. US road signs are in the font Helvetica because it has no serifs and it is deemed easier to read. Has anyone else here ever complained to the department of transportation because they misspelled a word on a road sign?

I still do this even if just under my breath. I am also intersted in the route system both state and federal. Some local roads I dont know there name only there number. I live about a half mile from Route US 1 it amazes me that it goes all the way from Maine to Florida. On the Merrit parkway when you go into NY its the Hucthenson parkway the last exit in Ct is 27 the frist in NY 29 both going down leads to much confusion.

US 1 in CT
a maze of signs that say north/south or east/west
The Route 1 corridor is a north/south highway,but in CT it really runs east/west same thing with I95 but all the I-95 signs say north/south.

The state highways between the parallel routes of I-95 and the Merrit Parkway always lead to onramps. Jump off onto any numbered state road and head towards the other parallel highway and there will be access to it.

PA is a great place for road geeks to explore.The geography is amazing and the history of the roads really interesting.

When I was little they said East /West but that all changed in the 70 or 80s.

Jman, you make me homesick! (I'm originally from Bucks County) Now I want some corn chowder and apple butter on still warm bread from the oven! Followed by shoo fly pie!

There are quite a few interesting towns up there, my husband and I honeymooned in dutch country, and bought our son a tshirt that said something like "my parents visited Intercourse and all I got was this lousy tshirt" but on the back it had a cute smiley face and it said "but they got me".
