Without getting too personal, what are you in therapy for? Anxiety? OCD type issues? What does an Aspie *do* in therapy? If we're simply a bit different, what can therapy do for you?

I'm asking these questions because I find myself in therapy for what used to be anxiety type issues. They are now looking to be Aspie issues instead and I'm wondering.. do other Aspies even go to therapy at all?

I'm in therapy for AS. I don't have anxiety, or OCD, I'm in therapy just for the symptoms of having being on the spectrum.

I'm there to understand about non-autistic people, why they do what I don't do, learn at least some about non-verbal communication, figure out if there's a way to adequately express myself, learn to use non-verbal communication, learn how to better talk to and get along with people, figure out if there's a way to live without constant tragedies and troubles due to the ASD, figure out how to manage meltdowns, figure out how to lead a live that at least touches my potential, learn how to do stuff myself that is required of non-autistic adults too.

That's about it at the moment I think.

No, I hate therapy. I don't understand how to articulate my emotions, so it's never worked for me. It just makes me angrier and more upset instead.

Thank you Sora.

I've been in therapy so long to "fix something" that I was really confused on what kind of therapy would be beneficial for AS since its not something to fix really.

For years I was told I was Bipolar and Borderline Personality. Now its believed I was misdiagnosed.

I'm in therapy for anxiety. I also have low grade to moderate depression but I don't think it's bad enough yet to seek therapy for it.

I would feel odd speaking to a stranger. And I have this narcisstic viewpoint that I know more than he/she does about how I think. And, I like this narcissism in me and don't care to change it even if someone finds it unheatlhy or neurotic or pathological.

Think about it. Do you think therapists go to see therapists? I bet they don't. When you know too much, you know too much. What could someone else tell your overanalytical mind? How to use your emotional toolbox? Sure.
It's quite humorous. Whenever I've sat across from a psych. I get the giggles and want to laugh or ridicule them somehow--not sure why. It's rude, really.

I guess I haven't had good experiences with therapists/psychologists/psychiatrists. I'm skeptical.

Mainly, I don't like someone taking notes when I speak! This irks me to no end.

Even at a PPT, I hate that note taking business--it's so dehumanizing. It feels strange when everyone starts writing after I speak. I want to say, put the GD pen/pencils down. I feel invaded. I feel, if something is important enough, you'll remember it. If not, then it shouldn't be recalled. Notes are for college lecture halls. I remember what's important. Others can do it to if they really wanted to, if they had a vested interest in the child/patient. No, he/she is simply another dysfunctional that needs sorting out and we better cover our you know whats.

My shrink wanted me to go to a social skills group but I gave my parents so much trouble about it because I do not want to be around people when it isn't necassary so I never did. Social skills groups seem to just be crash courses in how to appear normal. I can see myself yelling at the therapists because they told me to shut up about my obsessions. I will talk about meerkats and you will like it.

(I hope I did the quote thingy right) Oh my god that's how I FEEL! I pick my nose and OH MY GOD YOU JUST WROTE 100 WORDS WHY!! !! !! !! !! I feel a therapist didn't give me good advice she said I should go to a gym and socialize and just get over my issues. I tried this by getting a job and my behavior upset a coworker. I now beleive after much research and stuff that while not officially diagnosed that I have Asperger's. My overall opinion is my behavior has upset FAMILY,FRIENDS,STUDENTS,TEACHERS,COWORKERS,AND BOSSES SO DO NOT TELL ME TO JUST GO ON AND PUT THE PAST IN THE PAST BECAUSE I'LL JUST DO THAT AND THEN UPSET PEOPLE AGAIN AND IT'LL BE AN ENDLESS CYCLE!! ! IT'S ABOUT GETTING HELP TO CHANGE MY BEHAVIOR NOT SHOVING IT ASIDE AS IF IT'S NOTHING!! ! So for me I've tryed ON MY OWN to understand my behavior better and I hope my school/job experiences have taught me enough for the future. :-)

I feel if you are good in the field of Psychology in the aspect of helping people (Psychiatrist,Pscyhologist,Therapist etc.) UNDERSTAND THE Emotional Math problem. X (Listen to my problem)+Y(Process my problem)=Z (try to repair my problem) I say repair because psychology isn't a quick fix and they are a "repair" man of sorts and not a miracle worker so your t.v. might not be fixed such as your emotional issue might not be fixed. Also have MORE THAN ONE IDEA! I was given advice from my Therapist which I hated so I didn't use it her response "How am I going to help you if you don't take the advice?" My Psychology teacher understads the X+Y=Z issue and I would overhear her saying which she has also said to me "Let me know if that works." SO SHE CARES ABOUT YOUR EMOTIONAL STATE AND WANTS TO HELP YOU AND BY THOSE WORDS YOU KNOW YOU CAN GO TO HER AND SAY HEY THAT ADVICE DIDN'T WORK AND SHE'D GIVE YOU DIFFERENT ADVICE!! !! !

WHY COULDN'T THE PSYCHIATRIST AND THERAPIST I DEALT WITH COULDN'T BE MORE LIKE MY OLD PSYCHOLOGY TEACHER SHE WAS SO NICE AND AWESOME!! !! !! !!

The last time I was in therapy was 1993, before AS was widely known. I did go see a AS specialist to get the DX but I wasn't ready for any therapy at the time and still am not sure. I worked out many of my "issues" long beofer I knew I was AS and it is really help with getting a job that I need. They didn't offer that service, just a place to vent..Hey, I can do that here and save $20 co-pay and have people I don't have to explain how my mind works to you guys.

I do think it can be helpful to some people but I would only recommend going to some one who specializes in adult AS. I think NT therapy is mostly ineffectual for AS issues because the anxiety, depression, etc are not caused by psychological or chemical bases. I also got some very bad advice from therapist who thought I would be happier if I socialized more...maybe effective for an NT, but I need less socializing to be happy and healthy.

That's exactly how I feel, too! I'd have to sneak peaks at the clipboard to see what she was writing all the time because I was so paranoid.

I used to see a psychologist. I only did a few times, though, because she made me feel uncomfortable and didn't give very good advice on anything. I don't know if I would ever go back to a psychologist but I do want to start OT sometime. I think that could be very beneficial for me, a heck of a lot more beneficial than going to a psychologist.

I did years ago but found it a waste of time. They did nothing for me.

However, after reading on this site that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (the concept is that your thoughts make you unhappy so you get help with changing your thinking) can help some aspies, I made the jump and have my first appt this week with a CBT counselor. I'm crossing my fingers. If he doesn't have a clue what AS is, I'll probably not go back.
