Out of curiosity I made a poll to see if most of us can recognize a smile from say anger.

Yes, but only with the mouth and I would not have a clue with the eyes say if the mouth was concealed

Yes I can but I can't tell the difference between a fake smile and a true smile, I just know the shape of the face and the crinkly eyes.

I know when someone's smiling, or when they're sad. It's more subtle differences I have trouble with: contempt, disgust, irritation and sometimes fear all come across as fairly straightforward anger to me.

I didn't when I was younger, but my mum taught me how to look at the shape of the mouth.

Yes most of the time i can see that a person is smiling. But different kind of smiles are hard. There are so many types of smiles, and i never really know WHY a person is smiling. Thats harder than seeing that the person actually is smiling.

pretty straightforward. if you didn't recognize different variations of smiles any other way, one would think growing up in a culture of movies and television where everything is exaggerated for dramatic effect would drive it home.

yeah, i can pick them up.

I can distinguish fairly easily between: Toothy smile, and non-toothy smile too. Also there is half smile where only one side gets upturned. Based on that I see toothy smile as "ecstatic happiness", non-toothy smile as happy, and half smile as half happy. But like others have already stated if you're faking it, you've fooled me. Not that I really care either way if your faking it or not. If you are, you deserve to be is the way I see it.

Only if it's obvious. I've never been good with faces or facial expressions. I'm actually really, really bad with faces.
