Are you a know-it-all?

I absoutley cannot stand it when someone else knows about animals (my main obsession) and sounds stuck up about it or overly friendly (I want to punch the female animal handles because their tone annoys me). And yet I could probably never get a job because I would lecture them in a monotone. I also can't stand it when people don't have a clue what an animal is when the sign is right in front of them or refur to clouded leopards as leopards when the sign cleary states that they are not leopards. I've always thought people who did not know things I did were stupid and probably always will. Either way it's a no win situation.

I try hard to avoid coming off as a know-it-all. I've gotten in trouble for seeming like one multiple times in the past.

My step father calls me "smarty pants", because I'm forever correcting what he says. It's not like i'm trying to be a know-it-all, but I don't see a problem with pointing out others mistakes if it helps them to improve on their knowledge or abilities.
However, I was often called a know-it-all at school. The teachers had written on several of my reports that I was intellegent, but often said things out of context for what seemed like just for the sake of saying it.

I get called a know-it-all all the time.
My response? I know that too.

Good question. I have the problem of being a know it all. As a nurse I know lots of health related info and I hate when people question my knowledge.

I used to think I was a know-it-all.Then by chance at the age of 46 I discovered I'm an Aspie
and my whole perspective changed ! I'd gone all that time without even knowing such an
important fact about myself,so I'm more inclined to recognize that everyone has their own
special knowledge to impart.
When it comes to general knowledge,it's difficult to avoid correcting people instantaneously
but now I try to weigh up the consequences first. Will it embarrass the person to be corrected
in front of others ? Will people be less likely to offer me help if they think I know everything
already ? The trick is to balance knowledge and wisdom. Sometimes it's wise to allow
others to learn things for themselves rather than forcing knowledge onto them.

Yea, I correct people all the time... it's like... I almost feel bad if they are wandering around saying something that makes them sound like an idiot!

So I got the know-it-all label all the time growing up.

Well, I have said before that people used to always call me a "know it all". I tend to bite my tongue more now, and I am older so people are less likely to say such things. I should have said the same as "LoveableNerd", but I simply said "I never claimed to know everything, but I know about this.".

I resist the urge to correct people, but it does irk me when they get things wrong.

One thing that really gets to me is hearing the local tour guides talking about how nasty and brutish the middle ages were. They talk about trials by ordeal without mentioning that the hot iron you had to hold was paraded through the city in an hour-long procession before you had to touch it, or the ducking stool without saying it was just public humiliation and never killed anyone. I feel like giving a lecture on medieval corporal punishment every time they get started.

I used to be a know-it-all when I was younger. I've since learned to just keep my mouth shut and let people enjoy being wrong. *shrug*

I certainly go out of my way to avoid being a Know-It-All. It's just not worth the price of being whiny and irritating. In the movies, it's usually the whiny, irritating person who gets killed by the monster first. These are the characters you'd like to see get killed. Outside of the movies, know-it-alls are the people with all the facts and none of the friends.

In don't think it means you know everything and that you have no friends. Well, for me, I know A LOT and always try to appear as if I know, because I love being right, knowing more than others and always lectuaring people about their incorrect information!

Yet I do it in a way that only gets me called know-it-all by strangers and people I don't care about, whereas my friends, whom I lecture as much, don't say I'm a know-it-all. (Unless I ask them about it maybe?)

By your own admission, you're a know-it-all. There's no telling how people might react to that. If they've had a bad day, bad year, or a bad life, they may just swat you aside like a gnat. Knowing everything is fine, just watch your mouth among strangers!

At times

For most of my life this was an annoying dilemma for me--blurt out what I knew or bite my tongue till it bled to avoid be called a knowitall. Finally I ended up in a job populated by hundreds of other aspies and had the opportunity to see important meetings ground to a halt with arguments over semantics or highly unlikely scenarios. I also came to feel, like pluto, that people often have to find out things for themselves. You make a brief point, then it's up to them. That said, it is still natural for me to slip into lecture mode. I am thinking of becoming a volunteer naturalist next fall, so perhaps being a knowitall will finally benefit everybody. Again like pluto's experience, being diagnosed in later life has caused me to think of this tendency as a strength that I can use in the right setting.
