Do you have a strange rhythm or pattern to your words, as if you're reading from a script?

I just finished making a video and when I watched it, I noticed that at a certain point in my video, the pattern of my words was very odd and somewhat stilted. Or at least compared to the speech patterns of alot of other people that I know.

How many of you speak in a unusually formal manner? :| Do other people notice and do you get made fun of because of it?

Hi CK,

I know exactly what you're talking about. I know that I myself almost sound like I'm trying to show off and I say strange things in weird contexts, but to me it does seem normal, however if I play them back in my head it seems quite ridiculous.

Do you say things and then later just think about it and feel incredibly embarrassed by what you said and how stupid it sounded? I find that I do that quite alot if I record the conversation I'm having. Alot of people with AS are quite eccentric, and it's not really a bad thing. I think you just learn to live with it, because I'm sure though it may seem strange to you, they've adapted to it and they love you either way.

I am pretty formal when I speak... I tend to pause a lot when I speak, as well. I don't think anyone has noticed the formality, but occasionally someone will comment on the pauses. No makes fun of me for it, though.

I think i go back and forth between talking in a really formal geeky way and talking in a kind of over-exaggerated way, EMPHASIZING a whole BUNCH of words in MY SENTENCES. I think i tend to emphasize things more when i get excited, and actually get really animated(at least it seems so in my mind) with using different tones and stuff. I just don't have a lot of middle ground between those two extremes. My parents say that i've always had a tendency to be on the monotone side most of the time, though. I think my super-expressive-sounding voice is just something i picked up from being around other people.
In a public speaking class i took last year, my teacher said i had a wonderful "conversational" style of speech when speaking in front of people. The way i think of it, though, is that acting really animated in front of a group of people is the same as doing it when talking to people. Either way it's just something i picked up, not something that i naturally do in respone to people.. So the whole thing about learning how to "fake it" in front of people is a non-issue, it's just a matter of turning it "on." Plus, when you're in front on an audience, then i think its' considered good to sort of over-emphasize things.

Oh, I HATE the way I talk AND the sound of my own voice, outside of controlled circumstances!

You see, if I'm making a tape recording for somebody, then I can at least be aware to talk a certain way. Otherwise, my voice is so low and drawled and, like I'm chronically depressed. And worst of all, when I get happy or excited about something, I go into MAJOR lilt mode! I *HATE* THAT!! :x

But I guess that's how it is for most people. They think they speak well in their own minds, but when they hear their voices on an answering machine, oh GOD!
