Why will there be a witch hunt? (Did I miss something? I never watch the news.)
I honestly don't see why an otherwise competent autistic person shouldn't be ale to responsibly use a gun, assuming that he/she has control of their temper and is aware of appropriate use of the gun. A gun is a tool. I don't think anyone should own a gun unless they have a use for it, as a tool, ratherthan as a statuts symbol or a security blanket or to show off with, or worst of all, as a toy (! !!).

I have never discharged a round at a living thing
Hmmm. Well, I have. That's why I own a gun, to killl things with. It's what guns are for; killing living things. I use and have used a gun for the following, in order of frequency:

To humanely kill goats before butchering them.

To chase marauding dogs away from the goats and other livestock. I haven't ever actually hit or killed a dog. Sometimes the shot is intended mainly to frighten and warn them off. I usually warn the forst time, and then aim to kill if they come around again. Nearly all of them stay away after the warning. There have been a few times when I did intend to kill the dog but missed.

If only more people were responsible dog owners!!

Shooting at crows who were stealing our duck eggs and raiding the nests of the ducks (with developing ducklings. It got to the point where we had very few eggs for our family and no ducklings at all because the predation was so high. Again, I missed (hey, you try to shoot a crow out of the sky with a .22!! !), but it did reduce the incidence of the problem.
