Talk to your doctor.

With me Paroxetine (SSRI) works fine for both general and social anxiety at a very low dosage (10 mg per day). It's known to be slighltly sedative indeed.

Zoloft is very good for anxiety. It has a good calming effect on me and I only need a low dose of it (50 mg). Taking Xanax (again, very low dose, 0.25 mg) on an as needed basis (without abusing it) is extremely effective as well.

But like Mage said, it's probably best to talk to your doctor about this sort of thing.

I agree, why ask people you don´t even know? Talk to a doctor, not to strangers.

It's good to ask people who can give a personal perspective. Doctor's don't actually try the medications, they go by what they read in books. Also, being AS might impact on how antianxiety medication works.

I use clonazapam. Venlafaxine helps a bit, but you need to use it over a few months to feel the effect.

Well, doctors don´t try medication theirselves, but they are aware of empirical studies as well as the whole science behind these things opposed to subjective experience only. I doubt most patients actually understand why their medication works. Personal experience is interesting of course, but asking for advice which medication to use is something I wouldnt discuss on the internet, thats all I wanted to say.

You would hope they would be aware of empirical studies, by somehow I doubt it.
I think they listen to the drug companies promo / info.

Doctors (of course) are necessary to prescribe and assess effects - but first hand experience is always helpful.

I´ve worked as a volunteer in a hospital the last year, so trust me: They know what they´re doing! Actually, both my Dad,Granfather and Grandmother would be dead right now without treatment and medication. Economically yes, theres influence by companies, but that´s another topic. And first hand experience may be good, but we´re talking about medications against mental/psychological problems here. That´s not like a headache or a cold. And as everyone reacts different to pharmacy, there´s absolutely no point in asking for advice on an internetforum. Personal experiences are subjective and not relevan in answering the question if certain medications are useful or not for the threadstarter.

That´s why only a professional can help here. I would be careful with those things. Talk to a doctor first!

If you are in a hospital, the doctors will work in with a pharmacist - who should know about the best empirical evidence.

Doctors in the community will often ring a hospital to get good advice from specialists.

Depends on the doctor; with one in the past, I knew more about the studies and side effects than he did. It pays to learn in addition - my psych wanted to give me a medication, but it was my research that showed with my stomach issues that what he prescribed was a really bad idea before I started taking it. Further stories related here and elsewhere convinced me it isn't something I want to try anyway.

I have experienced the same. If I am to take a certain medication - I want to know about it. The intenet provides a mine of information.

Doctors prescribe heaps of medications, it's difficult to keep track of all the studies and potential side effects.

I take Paroxetine (Paxil) for my anxiety and boy! does it work really well.

Out of all the medicines I have ever taken, Paxil works the best. I'm not overwhelmed with side effects from the drug. And it honestly does help with anxiety a lot. As well as helping with depression.

Paxil really works.

I recently started taking Anafranil for my OCD, and it's a wonderful medication. It has also helped with my panic attacks. I also take Klonopin for panic attacks. Hopefully, you and your doctor can find the medication that is best for you.
