Ok, I just got tested to get into AP classes and the phycologist that tested me said that because I have a high (almost genius) IQ and a low average EIQ it indicates that I might have aspergers. I agree with her somewhat, and disagree with her somewhat if that makes sense. Here below are some of the asperger like qualities I posess. I would like your opinion on whether I have aspergers or not.

1. I dont have many friends. The ones that I do have only come over occasionaly and don't seem interested in talking/coming over outside of school.
2. I talk to myself... ALOT. I really only talk to myself when alone but I occasionaly talk to myself infront of people when I am bored (just like one sentence or 2). I am not quite shur if people have noticed it, but it would bother me alot if they did. Also, when I spend time with and talk to my family alot, the time I spend talking to myself is drastically reduced.
3. I get really anxious in social situations. I think that it would be notible to say that I am very sensitive to peoples emotions. The problem is not that I dont understand what people are feeling, its that I usually dont know how to react to it. I dont really have trouble saying the wrong thing persay, its just I feel that I should talk more because I REALLY REALLY want friends. the problem with the test on the EQ was just that. The faces that I was said to identify emotion in were not real faces, and I was not in the room with them so I couldnt really "feel" their emotions which I am very good at doing.
4. When I was 11, I got really into gymnastics. I had never gotten really into something befor that age. I think that that was because my mom had a stroke, my parents separated, and my dad would cry every night.... basically the whole thing was a complete mess and gymnastics, other than school, was the only stable thing in my life so I got really into it, and it was the only thing I could talk or think about for a while. Now its alot different, I dont feel that way since my family is stable. Could that have been a symptome of aspergers?
5. Some people say that when they meet me, there is something a little off about me. Even my closest friends could never really figure it out though.
6. I think that I have ADD or ADHD. Could some of these symptoms above be that?

And thats it:) Thank you all for your help!,

I feel like I have some qualities that are aspieish but I have so many that are NOT, mabye I just have social anxiaty or something, cause she just "decided" that I did have it based on my IQ and EQ and I heard that has close to nothing to do with it.

It is possible that you have AS, but most people with AS generally arent good at determining other's emotions. Do you find yourself thinking that everybody else acts crazy and emotional, or do you generally understand what other people are thinking. If your an aspie, then the rest of the population will seem like they are irrationally and overly emotional.

People with AS tend to separate thier emotions from logic when making decisions. At least until thier emotions cross a certian point, and then they behave overly emotional (often known as a meltdown, or shutdown). Do you find yourself being very unemotional, and then when you become overloaded lash out, or withdraw?

There are also other aspects of AS, such as intense interests in collecting information. Doing things like sports, or gymnastics is common for everybody, but an aspie trait is to collect a vast amount of information about something. For example, do you know who won every Olympic medal for gymnastics? Do you have an encyclopedic knowledge of some narrow subject?

Its possible that you dont have AS, and the low EQ score is just a fluke. But you may has Social anxiety, or difficulty making friends. In any case, whether or not you have AS, you could still gain some useful information from browsing this forum. There may be people here who can help you with your social anxiety, even if you dont have AS.

I know what you mean there. I understand facial expressions as well, just not how to react.
I think its interesting that you had to speak with a psychologist before taking AP classes. Is that pretty common? I never had to do anything like that.

Katie,

Based on your description, it is certainly possible that you have AS; it is also possible that it is ADD with social anxiety characteristics, or a number of other things. There are other tests as well that can be a good indicator in conjunction, although your score does seem pretty strong in favor of having more NT traits. Good luck, and try to pace yourself, there is a lot to learn and digest.

I'd give the test result to her, ask her opinion on it. Some people are quick to "label" someone, it's good to know why she thinks that way. She might be seeing things in you that either aren't there, or things that you've not noticed. Either way, it's good to gather more info on the topic.

Anyway, I noticed many of the questions didn't click with me, a lot of them asked about stuff I wasn't aware of until later. I didn't think I actually had any obsessions/focused interests until thinking about some of my past "projects," lol. Some of my traits were oblivious to me until further consideration. How was I to know I carried on with people by giving them the one sided monologue? I mean, there are things that I did without thinking about, and were pretty natural to me. It was when I came on here that I saw most of the "traits" revealed. Anyway, I'd talk to a qualified person before anything else, and perhaps peruse these boards, wealth of knowledge overflows here.

To the people who have replied the following info might also help: The only obsessions i have ever had are gymnastics, and music. I just realized that I DO love music more than alot of people but As far as facts and narrowed interests, no. I ask people questions and are polite with them, but its hard for me to start convo's with people that I don't know so I have a tough time making friends. When Im with friends, I basically just say whatever I am thinking withought even thinking of the impact. Like, I will blurt out something (thats how most of the convo's at our table get started) and then sort of go with it untill the convo ends, I start thinking about other things, and then blurt another thing that I think is interesting or funny. Is that aspieish? I would say that I had the social maturity of a 8 or 9 year old and Im 14, and I am smart which may explain why I currently enjoy talking to people eather younger or older than I.

To me, the obsession with gymnastics sounds like a coping mechanism to deal with the hardships in your family life. I hope your family life is better now. It sounds like a regular coping mechanism, not particularly Aspie. Although, bravo on developing such a good coping mechanism. I'm glad you didn't find something self destructive to do.

I'm not an authority on the issue. My advice is to go to several specialists, and also learn more about AS. Being on Wrong Planet is very helpful for learning more about Aspies, I find. You may be slightly Aspie, or just have an Aspie-like condition, like a few phobias that are common in Aspies. Psychological conditions often have overlapping symptoms. It can be very difficult to tell.

1. You are gifted. Gifted people have problems with isolation and fitting in. Usually, though, gifted people become less isolated as they get older and can hang out with people more like them (e.g. in AP classes, at university, in career). Gifted people are also similar to Aspergers (or at least to the stereotype) in many ways, but it's not necessarily the same thing.

2. If you took Simon Baron-Cohen's EQ test, it's a bad test. Terrible test. Ignore it. And I know what you mean about not being able to read paper people, when reading vibes when in the same room is so much easier.

I would keep an open mind about it, but not assume anything. You probably don't have AS, unless you have other symptoms. Do you have major problems following conversations? Do you have meltdowns? Sensory issues (above and beyond being a highly sensitive person)? Do you have no friends whatsoever? (You said not.) Give the AP classes a chance and see if you fit in better there or not. If you find that even in a gifted environment you're still not catching up socially, then take a closer look.

(My humble opinion, except for the part about the EQ. :P )

Try not to say symptoms, okay? We aren't the flu.

But, otherwise, the possibility of Aspergers might be worth exploring. Though, don't take IQ tests and EQ tests as indications of such - there are intelligent, heartless bastard NT's, too.

I actually overanalyse other people's emotions. I'm more aware of them than maybe some aspies are, but that may be because I work in a public service environment and have to deal with changing situations. But I tend to go very deeply into analysing emotions in other people to understand where they're coming from.

I'm also very empathic to the point of putting other people's judgments/feelings/whatever before my own in terms of validity or importance.

I would say I identify some with the OP in that I understand the emotions but have more trouble putting together a suitable response to them. I don't react well to emotional situations in other people, even if I am sympathetic to their situation, because it's unnatural to me somehow to break that barrier. But I certainly understand and often am affected by other people's emotions, sometimes to a very high level indeed.

I think it goes to show that everyone on the spectrum is different, and that most people probably have a slither of aspie in them whether they're full blown autistic or not.

People focus far too much on black and white "I am" or "I'm not". I know for a fact that it's not usually so simple for a lot of people. I definitely am Aspie, but my family...they all have certain traits without being Aspie themselves. My sister especially is probably 50%, since she's actually more neurotic, compulsive and antisocial than I am at times ;)

And some of us think symptoms are the appropriate word. I say symptoms all the time. Opinions on AS are diverse in every aspect and new people who don't know the ASD community well don't always know that they can listen to many different opinions and then form their own.
