I noticed the other day that while I was trying to listen to someone talking to me their words came out all jumbled. Like they weren't speaking English anymore or something. It was crazy and I know it's happened on other random occasions.

Does this happen to other people or just me?

Sounds like what poor ol' Charlie Brown went through.

I've not had this problem, thankfully. Sometimes it'll take me a second or two longer than usual to "get" what someone is trying to say, but def no "jumbling."

Yes, happens to me quite often. It leads to me saying "what?" alot, they (my friends) all think I have hearing problems.

I've had that happen to me before as well, and with me I think it's CAPD. When I have those moments I'll only ask twice before I just pretend I understand.

not like jumbled, but all talking is just noise to me unless i am paying attention, and even then it's noise and i have to do a replay to make sense of it. so i have to repeat everything in my head to hear it, so if my attention is distracted i will try to fill in the gaps and sometimes i come up with weird jumbly guesses.

My speech perception is like that. If people speak really clearly, it helps.

I hate when people talk to me and not get my attention first. Just sound, then it gets translated then I understand. By the time I answer it's like I never heard them. They probably don't understand how the process works

Yea, I have that all the time. Makes work fun, cause my boss just spits out random funny things, and the other guys laugh right away.

So I just laugh along then ask later. He gets it.

Has anyone seen the commercial for the Speach/Launguage/Hearing association? Cause that dude asking for directions on campus explains it PERFECTLY.

I don't really have a problem with 'jumbling' but I can't filter out background noise, like if I'm talking on the phone I can't digest what the other person is saying if someone else is speaking in the room or the TV is on or whatever. Same when I used to go out a lot. In a busy pub the jukebox merges with all the conversations of the others in there and I find it extremely difficult to focus on what is being said by someone just 2ft away. I actually find it easier in these situations to follow conversations going on around me than the one I'm involved in. Same on busy public transport. And I hate walking alongside busy roads beacuse I find the sound of the traffic unusually loud and quite intimidating. I use an iPod a lot now when I'm out , which definitely helps.

Oh, ye gods, yes! Now, the next guy to ask if I'm deaf, is getting his arm broken!

This happens to me too often! I usually have to keep asking what they were saying because it is like I just could no longer understand them unless they said it again for a few times. It is like I hear them, but my brain is not processing what they are saying into understandable words. Someone would say "Hey man, whats up? Haven't seen you in a while." and I would just hear sounds, and nothing else but just random sounds that I do not understand!

A lot of people get mad at me when I do this, but I can not help it, it is not like I am always comprehending them. When I am doing something I am obsessed with or if I am just doing nothing at all, I can not understand the person at all! It is frustrating when they are trying to say something important to me and I do not understand them!

This is very much like me, someone can tell me something that I hear everyday and my brain doesn't seem to recognise it as words, just sounds. It just doesn't register with me sometimes and I am frequently asked if I am a little bit deaf but I'm not because I have been tested twice and I actually have excellent hearing!

I am wondering if I have something like auditory processing disorder but It could be language processing disorder, does anyone know the difference between the two? The websites I have looked on don't seem to explain it very well.

Yes, frequently. When someone is speaking to me, it is very common for me to hear words incorrectly. For instance, I could very easily mistake the words "you must be hard of hearing" to "you must have hid the ceiling," or something similar.

That happens to me all the time.. It's like they're doing the Muppet's 'swedish chef' or something..

I have to just close my eyes and ears and really concentrate for a while, and then ask them to repeat. Makes me feel a bit dumb actually

I find it really awkward when I find myself asking someone to repeat themselves 3 times. Sometimes after that I end up having to act like I understand what they said, or sometimes they say never mind after THEY get fed up of repeating themselves.

But sometimes I don't seem to have a problem.

Normally when there is background noise, it's far more difficult to dunerstand what someone is saying, but everyone else seems t oeb completely fine with the background noise!

It happened to me at work. I got beeped on my radio, I couldn't understand the office clerk. My mind was focused on other things I couldn't get my ears to focus on her so I decided to go down to the office and ask her what she said. But she beeped me again and repeated herself and this time I understood her after I plugged my other ear and had the radio up to my ear so I can focus. But after I said "812, baby crib" she said something but I couldn't understand it but I assumed she must have said "yes."
