I'm mostly curious if anybody else diagnosed with Non-Verbal Learning Disorder goes on this forum, since it struck me that its somewhat close to Aspergers. (or atleast, I am!)

But, other than saying hello, I guess I'll ask: Hows NVLD affecting your life so far?

It was suggested to me once that I could have NVLD.
I'm definitely add/hd though... according to the two different docs who diagnosed me.

I finally read up on what NVLD is and some of the things definitely fit me, but not everything I read.
Still, I'll leave it at that.

I seem to recall a few folks around here who say they have, or their kids have, NVLD.
I'm sure you'll get some response other than my pretty worthless one here...

I was diagnosed with NLD and ADHD... I was told that it was on the autistic spectrum and that NLD is very similar to Asperger's and that I could find help if I researched Asperger's support groups, etc.

I have seen it abbreviated both ways.. as NLVD or NLD... On the diagnosis form they gave me it just said NLD, and that's what I've been calling it, but when I try to find out any news or the latest research on the internet, I will key in both abbreviations and spell it out also.. I have also seen it called Nonverbal Learning Disability as well as Nonverbal Learning Disorder.. Eventually, when it gets in the new DSM-V, we'll have more clarity on exactly what to call it.. ; )

last year my 8 year old son was diagnosed with both as well and was also told it was "on the spectrum." 2 weeks ago, he was officially diagnosed with AS. check out this site, it shows the overlap of NVLD and AS (as well as other things)...

I was re-diagnosed as NVLD last year. I had an AS diagnosis back in '03, but I didn't fit the criteria enough. NVLD fits me much better, but I don't have any problems with my motor skills.

im not DXed as is.... but i've always had issues with some types of math... i used to throw tantrums in elementary school and was put in the slow math class (even though i was in magnet school)........

there's other things too... but it's hard for me to tease it all apart so i'm fine just contributing my quirks to AS-NLVD-ish things.

I don't think I have NVLD. I have read up on the comparisons between it and AS. Generally, people with NVLD don't have the special interests associated with AS.

What is NVLD? I'm interested in disorders, but I don't believe I've heard of that one (Or have forgotten it if I did hear about it). Could you explain? Maybe a link or two?
I would apperiate it!

Yup, I have NLD (officially diagnosed). I would write more, but I'm heading off to bed, so more tomorrow!

I was diagnosed with NLD ten years ago. I've found that Asperger's fits me much better, though (for example, people with NLD don't normally stim or have obsessions).

I have NVLD and that is why I am here in fact. My therapist found WrongPlanet by accident, and offered me the link. She is not a member here, in fact she told me that she had never seen it, and instead, simply wanted me to have a look. As it turns out, it was a great idea. I have a lot of the same effects we all seem to have around here, and it definently is on the spectrum.

I almost act childish at times in the way I misunderstand emotions and concepts that many people would consider simplistic. When I went to public school, I had a teacher who was extremely disappointed with me. She believed that because I could academically preform at an exceedingly high level, yet could not for the life of me understand the simplistic concepts in life, I was doomed. She actually used the somewhat antiquated term 'Idiot Savant.'

By the way, if it helps, I was diagnosed NVLD and NVD.

I genuinely hope I have in no way sounded arrogant.

I read that page and that is exactly what I was like as a child and still am. It could have been written about me. I hope NVLD will be put in the DSM4, I might go for a diagnosis then...

NLD is similiar to AS in that there are problems with nonverbal communication, such as poor eye contact and difficulty with facial expressions and intonation. Also, difficulty dealing with change in common. We also take things literally and may have difficulty with sarcasm.

NLDers also usually have significant problems with motor skills and visual processing. We have problems with perceiving time accurately and organizing ourselves. Spatial perception is very problematic. We may have poor visual memories, but excellent auditory memories. Verbal skills are often very strong, and we tend to have kickin' vocabularies. There is often a very large gap between verbal IQ and performance IQ (my difference is 39 points- 2.5 standard deviations).

NLDers may have obsessions, just like kids with AS, ADHD, and giftedness (there is a large overlap in symptoms between these conditions), and also like in both those conditions, sensory integration issues are common.

Kids with NLD tend to internalize their feelings, and there are high rates of depression and anxiety.

Unlike AS, social problems may be more mild, and kids with NLD are probably not "aloof" like some with AS may be. Imaginary play skills are probably normal. Obsessions and stimming may not be present, or may not be as pronounced.
