i have an odd idiosyncrasy that i would like to find out if it is shared by other people with ASDs: i often find myself applying pressure to the area between my top lip and nose (just below my septum, to be anatomically correct) with the side of my index finger. sometimes i will cup my palm around my mouth at the same time. i think that the reason why i do this is because it has a calming effect on me.

i don't know when i first started doing this because i only noticed it a few years ago- so, as far as i am aware, i have always done it. no one has ever pointed out this behaviour to me so, luckily, it can't look too strange.

does anyone else do this or know anyone who does? or is it just another emma-thing?!

I think it's just you, but doubtlessly a cacophony of people will join in singing, "Me too!"

By the way, thanks for making this post. It's a perfect example of a certain type of topic around here.

what's that supposed to mean?

*edit*

that's pretty hypocritical coming from someone who's recent threads include:

"does anyone else have a deficit of memories?"
"social skills geting worse?"
"how distractable are you?"
"are you a morning person?"
"do you have a schizoid personality?"

all of which have the theme this is something i have noticed about myself- does anyone else have similar experiences?.

i have replied to several of your topics (despite the fact that they are often extremely narcissistic) and i have always responded sensitively and treated you with respect- i didn't deserve to be spoken to that way.

ok, I spent several minutes trying this... and now my nose hurts  (I really should have taken a picture of me trying to get the side of my index finger under my nose with my palm around my mouth at the same time  )

do you mean something like doing a hitler-moustache-impression with your finger? I find it's a very sensitive area, in fact I love to 'feel' things there (especially soft fabrics like soft cuddly toys), it's even more sensitive than fingertips.

what I do that's similar to that is, when sitting at the computer (like now) I lean on the desk, with my left elbow on the desk, and my face resting on the back of my hand. the area-below-septum rests precisely on the knuckle of my left index finger, and my cheek bone rests on the back of my palm. now that's what I call relaxing :)

yeah, sort of like that! but with my finger slightly curved. it feels comforting, like tapping my chin but without the movement.

that sounds similar- but with a different part of the hand.

Yes, I find I do that quite often. I also used to suck my thumb (for too long) and used to rest my index finger over the bridge of my nose, too.

I think it's a "pressure" thing.

I press my entire index finger over the upper rim of my upper lift, then pull it down while stroking my beard. . . .nothing really abnormal about this motion, IMO.

Nope, I don't do that.

When I'm standing, I cross my arms to avoid fidgeting. So now I will pinch my arms with my fingers. I suppose that's better than constantly moving my arms, which makes me look nervous.

I tried pressing my finger on the rim. it just hurt.... Perhaps I was doing it wrong?
