Hi all, I'm turning in a book report on The Science and Fiction of Autism by Laura Schreibman to my HS Psychology class on Friday, but thought you guys might want to have a look-see, since after all we are the experts on autism ^_^

While the mental abnormality known as autism has become a household name in recent years, the disorder in itself still remains a mystery. One of the few facts we know about autism is that there remains many factors to be accounted for in the classification, diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and possible cure of the disorder, or if it a chance at a cure should even be attempted. The scope of each of these problems has accounted for massive controversies surrounding autistic individuals and their families, and the decisions they make to deal with this potentially debilitating disorder. Many books about autism, as well, tend to take to one side or the other when explaining these controversies. However, Laura Schreibman, Professor of Psychology at the University of California at San Diego and director of the university’s Autism Research Program, prefers to take a more objective point of view. In her book, The Science and Fiction of Autism, Laura lays bare the controversy by exploring multiple approaches to the diagnosis, treatment, and cure of autism and stating their benefits, deficits, and appeal to autistic individuals and their families. While most books on autism use the reader’s emotional ties to draw them into viewing autism a certain way, The Science and Fiction of Autism simply states the facts, while maintaining a professional, objective point of view. Whether you are an autistic individual, the parent or friend of one, or simply want to learn about autism for whatever reason, The Science and Fiction of Autism is an enriching and informative read.
