I really struggle to understand what a wage should be....

Is £37,000 a good yearly salary good or bad? I am in the UK.

I am about okay but I still struggle... so I am concerned that I need to earn more, and that my employer is not paying me enough?

It depends on your local cost of living, but I thin 37,000 pounds is pretty awesome!

£37k is pretty good going, I think median average wage is around £18-20k. Personally the most I've had is £13k. :?

Well, objectively, yes, its a fine wage BUT what you really need to look at is your wage compared to others doing similar jobs.

There must be wage guides out for your type of position?

You struggle on that salary? Sheesh, what do you spend on? I don't struggle, and I only get $800 a fortnight. That's about 300£, or 8000£ per year. You gotta cut down your superfluous spending, buddy.

In the UK, how much money you need depends a lot on where you live. London and surrounding areas can be very expensive, especially if you want a place to live of your own.

Whether it is a good salary of bad depends on what you are doing, what skills you have, and how rare/in demand they are. Unfortunately, it also often depends on someone elses opinion of those factors. Unfortunately, salary is seldom fair or an accurate reflection of someone's value.

It really shouldn't be that hard.

Why not get a job, newchum? Before this job, I got only $400 a fortnight. Before that, I worked for $10 a day doing Computer Technician work. A pittance, really. All my money went to my father. Do you have a license, newchum? You could get a job at a Pizza place, delivering. Or, my favorite job, folding boxes and cutting pizzas. That was a really fun job. I don't think I've ever been happier than when I worked delivering pizzas.

Yeah, that's OK. In London that's just about enough, where abouts are you? You're in IT right (I think?), so that's about average for someone with good experience and a decent employer.

For any of our US/Aussie friends out there, that salary isn't really that much when you consider that an average house costs arounds £180,000 (US $324,000) these days. A hell of a lot more in London too...

If you have kids too then your money really starts flying out of the window, expect around £600 (US $1080) a month for nursery fees for each child.

Council tax is now well over £1000 (US $1800) a year for most people, and climbing fast...

Add the cost of fuel- nearly £1 a litre (nearly $7 per US gallon)- and £37k suddenly doesn't look all that much! 8O

For the record, if think the average wage is now nearer £25k (US $45k)these days!

I live in the North. I couldn't survive in London on that I don't think. Just adding up all the things - water rates, sewage collection, council tax, rent, telephone, electric, car insurance, petrol, adsl... this is before you have even done the grocery shopping.... it really is frightening once you deduct all of the required outgoings and see what is left.

£37,000 is a very good salary. My stepdad is in computing, and that is a good/average amount for people in IT.
