I was wondering if anyone out there might have a link to any articles that pertain to aspies in the workforce. I have been googling but I have to work pretty soon so I'm running out of time and not finding anything of much interest.

I don't know if you'd find this useful or not but I found this a while back. I don't really remember what it says but I don't think I found it that bad, or it wouldn't be on my hard drive.

The Employers Guide to Asperger Syndrome

I got it from this page:
http://www.autismsocietycanada.ca/life_with_asd_adults_youths/resources/index_e.html
which also has a bunch of other links I haven't checked out. I don't know if any of them are any good or not. So often it's all the same information that doesn't really say anything. :P

Good luck!

Thanks Anemone, I didn't know our lovely Canadian government knew what AS is.

I'm impressed with that. It seems like an in-depth, non-stereotypical, factually-enriched article. Not at all the type of bullet-pointed, antieducational pap put out by American health organizations or the department of labor....

Although - I do find it amusing that they list one of the AS strengths as "perseverance"...

Most people dont get so engrossed in their hobbies that they forget to eat. Perseverance, or tenacity can indeed be a very aspie trait.

Yes ^^ I am amused because they list it as a strength. Not that it is not a strength, but that most people do not see it that way when applied in terms of someone on the autistic spectrum. The root word is the same, but it *almost* means two completely different things in different contexts. Perseverance in a military general is a good quality, people believe it to be an annoying quality in someone with Aspergers. I am amused because it could be mistaken for intentional wordplay, but I'm not sure, in this article, it was intentional wordplay.

Actually it begs the question - what is the difference between perseverance and perseveration?

Thanks for the site, so far it's pretty interesting, although I do think it can be a tad confusing, there's a ton of different links, with more links and more links...:) But so far I'm going through and I'm enjoying reading it. I would like to find an article about how aspies can have problems in the workforce and how employers might be able to help them. Reason being, I'm considering showing an article to my human resource manager. It's not because I've gotten in trouble or anything like that. Just trying to raise awareness.

Oh, you mean how employers can help us rather than how we can help them. I haven't seen anything on that. Someone may need to write something up at some point. Of course I would have no idea what to write. Help? What's that?

I just forwarded the link to my boss. :)

I had to quote this, just because i found it so great:

"What would happen if you eliminated the autism gene from the gene pool? You would have a bunch of people standing around in a cave, chatting and socializing and not getting anything done."

"Interviewer to job candidate: “Why should I hire you over the other applicants?”
Job candidate with Asperger’s Syndrome: “I don’t know how to answer that because I haven’t met the other applicants.”"

I know. I liked that one, too.

But if you'll provide me a list of all their skills, I'll add mine to it, and then do an indepth analysis to let you know which one of us is best for the job.

Two days later - Harry's the best candidate and will rapidly expand your company, Joe and Sam are the next two best. But i'd appreciate it if you'd still consider me. i can hire people - opps, thats your position.

There isn't a great deal of literature out there on this topic (which is one of the reasons I'm so interested in it). I have an article on my website that has some info in it -- check out the section Relevant Accommodations in particular.
