How do you go about finding a tolerable part time job? I don't have any work references as I've been at home for years, but the economy is making it harder and harder on the average family.

I have an undergrad degree, but no particular stand out skills. I see I'm supposed to be some type of techie genius and I'm not. The real kicker is the panic disorder and severe social anxiety I have, because the symptoms are very visible. And yeah I've failed alot trying to "find myself". I look good on paper, but that is about it.

I'd like to be selfemployed somehow, but I don't know what I could bring to the market that would interest people. It REally sucks being Aspie enough I have to work hard at maintaining, but NT enough to be accepted at first glance. Yeah I'm pretty down on myself tonite :(

I'm sorry to hear this. I am doing a few things part time on my own. What are your skills? You can create your own online business by using them and that is what I did. I am also taking a course in medical transcription. I have connections to MDs and such, so I am hoping to get a work from home job in that, but.. thats iffy since I have no experience yet :( Even though I have connections, no guarantee. Why are you feeling so down on yourself, did something trigger it?

Try a temp agency. They test you to evaluate your skills, and you can learn lots of new skills from the jobs they find you. You can get jobs in different industries to see what you like best.

I last used a temp agency, if you have one they are ideal.. you go through a one or two hour screening process and you're done!.. and the plus side is, it doesn't matter how well you do really because they make money off of you, it isn't like going into an interview at a real job, even if they ask you similar or the same questions

Those are some good ideas. Employment has not gone well for me. I think I need to find work in a position with the less contact the better at this point.

And I do have alot going on besides being concerned about all the bills. I have neighbors that would rather I live somewhere else I believe by the way they act toward me. Some were friendly and I appreciated that, but now it's not going so great.

Thanks for your support and suggestions as they mean so much, because we all understand Aspie symptoms at differing levels.

A friend and I started employment as relief staff (she still does this but she's seems to be edging into part time slowly) in this you work short hours and often cover part time workers. I used to work 3hrs a day for a week once in a while before they took us on for longer periods. The jobs I did were cafe assistant, cleaner and receptionist my friend has done these as well plus a front desk job at the local theatre where she doesn't see many people and handles email and phone queries.

Another option is teleworking. Many companies now offer their employees the option of working at home.

Yep Temping agencies are GREAT. I was a chef (one of the worst choices for ASD) I was constantly having meltdowns and walking out, temping meant that i was only there for a day or two and generally getting people out of the s**t (really good use of any AS analytical skills you may have) I have left catering and now earn three times as much as a self employed window cleaner, I love it, just me, my radio/mp3 player and a squeegee plus a s**t load of money :D :D

I would like to become self employed myself. I just wouldn't like those phone calls, explaining to me what's wrong and thinking up the suggestion in my head. I'd be able to fix it if I was there without thinking (compute engineering A+ if anyone was wondering)

I just need to get my certification and work my way up to managerial level then I can decide from that if it would be ideal for me to go self-employed or not. If I can handle customers at that level, then yes. If not, no big deal, next plan

Probably. But Im dealing with so many different issues other then not being unemployed so I placed it here.

I had thought about doing a basically online business selling specialized dog and cat products. I had thought of sketchig out some doggy outfits and cat collars. All those purchases people who treat their animals like children have an interest in. I talked to dh and he liked the idea, but I don't think it's viable until the economy takes an upswing and people have more spendable cash in their pockets.

I agree; now's not the time to start a business. I'm researching starting a business selling needlework patterns online, and I'm glad I'm nowhere near ready to start it yet. It does help if your customers actually have money to spend!

There's not much to tell right now. I eventually plan to sell crochet, knitting, quilting, and cross-stitch patterns online. Right now I'm still researching how to start a business. I have quite a few things to learn before I will be ready.

If you are diagnosed with a disability, you can go to your local vocational rehabilitation center and they can help you. They will hook you up with an adult service provider and they will assign you to an employment services case worker who will help you find a job. You can also go to your local unemployment office and ask them about the IMPACT program which helps people with barriers to employment. Having not been employed for awhile is a barrier.

Sometimes VR will help people to get set up in their own employment opportunities.
