I about drove my car off the road into a ditch yesterday, as I listened to Michelle Trudeau's piece about a young man leaving home to attend college. Overall it was a pretty good piece about the importance of transition support, but repeatedly Trudeau referred to his AS as a mental illness.

For chrissakes, this is NPR...home of the politically correct. I was horrified by the ignorance.

Anyway, whether or not you caught the piece, register your outrage here:

I'm offended, as Asperger's is no mere mental illness. It's an untreatable developmental disorder that provides lifelong disability.

Political correctness does not equal intelligence. I'm sure NPR will hear about this but will sweep it under the rug like most other criticism of the radio station.

Good find.

Honestly,
that is disturbing as we don't do things that are insane like Bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Someone wants to get sued.

I'm not outraged. It was an ignorant mistake, but a mistake nonetheless and people make them from time to time. People get offended too easily in this day & age, IMO. I'd send her a nice, succinct letter of correction and be done with it. AS still isn't spoken of or even heard-of much in everyday society. The woman evidently didn't research the topic too deeply or else she'd have known to use the correct terminology.

NPR is a left leaning psuedo intellectual half hearted program. You have to take ANYTHING they say with a grain of salt ANYWAY! HECK, just a few days ago they spoke with someone that supposedly came up with a new battery, etc... that was going to revolutionalize things, etc... It WASN'T new! It DIDN'T require a lot of thought, etc... Sometimes they can be really silly. I kind of like the program "Wait! Wait! Don't tell me!" that they ALSO have, but they could also poke fun at THEMSELVES!
WWDTM simply makes it clear that humans can do some pretty STUPID things, etc...

To make a long story short, don't get TOO upset! They are just parroting stuff from other sources.

EDIT: They should just execute that autistic Motherf***er, since he won't last 3 days in the big house and will hang himself anyway.

I'm sick of this BS media-spread stereotype that Asspies are proficient hackers. Asspies are DUMB AS sh** who can't even wipe their own asses, they only have indexed knowledge from what they've learned in their spare time whenever they're not showering. Their accumulated knowledge really holds no purpose besides their worthless existence. Some are knowledgeable with computers because they got nothin to do, not 'cuz they have a genuine interest.

Just cleanse these f**** already.

Asperger's is not a mental illness, but people with Asperger's are more prone to mental illnesses than the general population

Here it is, in the NPR archives. There were five pieces on autism that day. I will have to listen to them all to see what the masses are being told about me and those like me.

EDIT: And they added a correction that Asperger's is not a mental illness but a "neurological and developmental disorder."

I think this is a good attitude to have.

Ehh...just blow it off. Asperger's is a developmental disorder, not a mental illness. I'm not outraged; just blow it off. For me, it's small potatoes.

I wouldn't get too upset over it. Most people don't make much distinction between an illness and a disorder, I'd suggest a respectful clarification.

I like NPR, and they don't seem to be a liberal radio station, as many say.
