Has anyone ever moved to a new place, area or country because of social opportunity (as opposed to economic, educational etc.)?

I see so many posts about people wanting to do this, being Aspies there may be the feeling of not fitting in where you are. And it's always about liberal/conservative cultures.

But who has actually done it? For example I came here to Edinburgh, from deepest Scotland, originally to go to university. When I graduated and found full time work, again it was in Edinburgh I found it. So that was for educational and economic, not social reasons.

But who has actually moved for social reasons? Was it worthwhile due to social reasons, or was it not what you thought it would be?

I moved to another state for college thinking I would be leaving my burdens behind and would have a fresh start socially. Despite my confidence and enthusiasm, I wasn't equipped to pull this off. I made no lasting friends and spent most of my time alone.

I moved from a town and college that was about as far to the northwest as one could get in Texas without being in the Panhandle, to a town and college in the Hill Country of central Texas. Everything is so hectic here, and was so laid back in the town in northwest Texas.

I've been thinking about moving to an area (other side of the country) that is not quite so deep inside the Bible Belt but find that where I live now has everything I need.

That's kinda a tough question for me, I do like some parts of North Carolina, but my town, High Point, is kind of a real tricky place to meet people in (especially if you have an personality based off retro TV, computer/internet culture, and video graphics [like closing logos, TV idents, etc.]).
