I personally never use them. I always use to wonder why they didn't have stalls for them.

Because as males, it is quicker and easier for us to urinate in a standing position.

I certainly don't do it in urinals, but when I have too much of phlegm I have to spit it out somewhere

Spitting in public is decidedly uncouth, unless you're in China. The Chinese spit all the time, apparently.

travel a bit to the third world, you'll find it is very common...USA would not be able to function without Kleenex

I won't use a urinal if I have to stand next to someone unless there's actually a line.

I actually prefer sitting, but it's easier to stand some times.

I've never had a problem with urinals and I've never been able to identify with people who do, although I can understand why someone would (if that isn't contradictory). I've always been quite open with my body.

As for spitting, I believe people spit in urinals because spitting is fun and a nice release, and spitting into a drain/toilet is the best place to do it. I used to spit a lot in the shower, both to spit out the shower water and just out of habit. People probably spit at the urinal a few times for fun and then it becomes a habit and they do it just about every time.

Aside from illness, when it's a necessity, spitting is always uncouth and aggressive, or the sign of a dipper. Oh, that's back to uncouth again, isn't it?

As for the topic: I've never in my life used a public restroom, much less made the release of waste a recreational social activity by standing at a public pissoire. Won't even use a private single-occupant toilet if there are humans milling about outside the door. Sorry, misspoke - not won't - can't.
