I have rain man and mercury rising. :D

For years my parents always called me rain boy and simon (they did this sarcasticly).

simon because of eye contact + I love mazes

rain man because of mono tone and habit of repeating things I said

After they started the process of diagnosing me with aspergers the comments dramatically decreased.

I sorta dont like these movies because those kids are so severe it give people the wrong impression of autism. I prefer it when TV shows try to do autism (like the Dead Zone episode wasnt to bad even though he was quite severe too granted that was more do to PTSD then autism.)

I fear we may have a similar sense of bad humor.

And I'm Rain Man when severely depressed. That's the only Autism movie I've seen.

Mozart and the Whale is about adults with Asperger's who fall in love. It was supposed to be in theaters by now but it seems to be delayed. It's floating around on bittorrent but of course downloading it that way would be wrong.

Simon and Raymond (raymond is rain man) both have savant skills and HFA opposed to aspergers.
Aspergers is much milder than classical or HFA

Lets just say your holding a cube. Each side is colored diffrently. Instead of Identifying the Cube right away, they only get the details. This is could result in a mild retardation. Just getting the detailes is classical autism.

If an individual meets all of the criteria for HFA except communicative abnormality/history of language delay, they are said to have Asperger's syndrome.

Basicaly aspergers is milder than HFA and HFA is milder than classical autism (autism with mental retardation).

I wanna find the TV movie called SonRise. I probably mentioned it once before. Couple finds out their son is autistic and has an IQ under 30. After some radical (for the time) treatments, he becomes totally transformed. Kinda similar to what I went through, and at roughly the same time.

Actually, it's "autism."

You've simultaneously tempted me and made me feel very very guilty. I'm currently downloading it  .

It's not so wrong if I go see it in theaters, as well, is it?

AS is not always milder than HFA,people can have language difficulty, lower IQ and still get an AS diagnosis, whether the dx is what the majority of pyschs would agree with though...

HFA is just abbreviating for Kanners/classic autism, albeit in the higher functioning form.

I have seen Rain Man but not any of the others mentioned. Compared to "Rain Man" I think "As Good As It Gets" with Jack Nicholson is a better representation of Aspergers.

How can you have AS and have a lower than average IQ, when it says people with AS have average to high IQ's?

If *it* says that then *it* is wrong (whatever *it* is). The diagnostic criteria for autism and AS are not divided based on IQ. The main distinction (for children) seems to be the age at which the develop speech (or non-verbal communication skills) and whether or not they engage in symbolic or imaginative play. It's hard for someone who is non-communicative to display a high IQ since they are not likely to respond to testing. That doesn't automatically mean that someone who is communicative will have a high IQ.
