My husband is diagnosed with ADHD. He has a lot of social issues, its why we get a long so great. LOL

He isn't medicated. Medication never did much for him and he has some horrible memories of what being on Ritalin felt like when he was a child. So he's reluctant to go on anything. HOWEVER.. he has trouble sleeping. I'm sure that its a combination of caffiene, and poor habits and I believe that if he could do better with those he'd see an improvement. He is not tired until about 2 am every morning. If he goes to bed at a decent hour he lays there and is restless. His mind races. He ends up getting back up, or laying there and having unfillfilled sleep. Sometimes its 5am or so before he falls asleep. MY day starts at 6am because we have children together. There are many days that I don't see him often because he's sleeping during the day. No matter how much sleep he gets, during the day he is always tired and he's awake at night.

Are there any medications that would help with this, or does this sound like something he's going to be doing for the rest of his life because he enjoys it?

It does cause issues in our life. In my life. And I do believe he'd like to have a more normal schedule, but its too hard for him to change it on his own.

Thoughts?
I noticed a post talking about insomnia and figured I'd ask here.

Tylenol Simply Sleep, it's OTC, cheap and non-addictive.

How about trying melatonin? It is a naturally produced hormone that regulates sleep. Individuals with ADHD and/or autism often benefit from taking melatonin supplements, and the time needed to fall asleep is significantly reduced.

Melatonin leaves him jittery for some reason. We have tried this. My Aspie daughter uses it.

It seems the biggest issue is he isn't tired at night. Its like a switch goes off in his brain he says, and suddenly at night he has tons of energy. When the sun is in the sky he's drained. He says he's always been like this. Needed daily 3 hour naps all through life.

Its not depression. I've seen him depressed and his sleep issues have been present no matter what. So I'm at a loss. Its not a once in awhile thing. His is constant. Every single night. We have slept in separate beds for years because of this issue. :(

Well if he doesn't like medications then perhaps some herbs might help.

Peppermint is great for relaxation and can help with headaches.

Camomile, cascara sagrada, Comfrey tea, Hops tea, Lobelia are all great herbs to take to help with insomnia. I would also suggest adding peppermint because is great for relaxation and can help with headaches. Just don't take the peppermint right before bed as it is a stimulant and can keep you awake but in the long term it will relax you so you can go to sleep.

I can relate to insomnia. Unfortunately I am on sleeping pills and if I am not on it I won't sleep. I am eating better and getting plenty of exercise now. But it doesn't seem to help with my insomnia. I have to take melatonin and the Imovane (Canadian Lunesta) in order to get my sleep. Insomnia is common with those who have ADHD as I have it too.
