Does it happen to you that you are embarassed by your traits (their amount or kind) even among other people with AS (so such ones who would be able to understand you fully regardless of the level of your weirdness)? Do you take an attempt to hide them (for example not expressing your untypical, controverssial opinions, not mentioning some of your quirks) to show yourself in better light and seem more normal?

My wife fully understands and accepts me despite my quirks, but even around her I'm still embarrassed of them. It doesn't stop me from doing it, though, because when I'm at home relaxing I'm making up for holding back all day at the office.

I just stay quiet. I don't have the energy to be that animated and opinionated all the time. I am busy dealing with a slight discomfort. This manifests as an irritation and people I know really well hear the eccentric views and the off the wall opinions. Usually mine involve what's wrong with society and how I feel like I don't fit in and how others feel who don't fit in either and how we have to put up with so much from others...typical stuff.
It's not that I am embarrassed, I just don't want the hassle.

I am the same as sbcmetroguy, I tend to bottle things up all day at work, then when I am relaxed at home the eight year old in me gets to run free, literally!
I am embarrassed at times, as I think perhaps I shouldn't be acting like that, but I can't help it and I won't change anytime soon

When I think of how I used to be, I get embarrassed. I still have interests, buy I've learned to keep them to myself.

I try to cover my special interests sometimes, just because people get tired of them. That's always tough because I don't have much else that I'm interested in when I've got a special interest. I have actually never met an Aspie in person, so I don't know what that's like.

It's not as much an issue for me as it is my partner. He'll tell me to stop humming in public. I don't even know I'm doing it. And when I talk to loud he tries to discreetly tell me to take it down a notch or two.

I'm super embarrassed about my stims.

Whenever I'm out running around the cul-de-sac and other people come out of their houses, I run to the other side of the street and pretend they don't see me. When I pace around the downstairs of our house at night and my sister comes down, I run back upstairs and wait till she's gone to continue. Everybody tells me I don't have to be embarrassed, but I know that the way I move is awkward; my siblings used to make fun of me for it and there has been at least one instance of a kid in the neighborhood making fun of me (others probably do it behind my back).

I've tried using exercise machines, but they don't give me the same kind of "runner's high" I get when I'm actually running.
