I have not been diagnosed yet, but part of it is trying to find similarities. What might be AS, what might be ADHD, what might be attributed to abuse, etc.

I am trying to define certain outlines of "me" and what parts of me are me and what parts are environmental and what parts are attributed to what I might have.

I agree in theory eggman, although food preferences may not be a good one to point out since there is a strong association between food preference patterns and AS. I suppose because it is such an every day thing (more than once a day for most), there is a lot of scope for eating habits and preferences to intersect with routinisation (associated with AS), and also because it is an activity that always involves at some of the senses (taste, smell, touch and sight), it has a lot of scope to intersect with AS related sensitivities.

But certainly, all of us are so much more than AS. AS might be a strong influence in our lives, but it is by no means determinate.

Couldn't agree more with you eggman.

Mostly DNA and individuality I believe. We didn't come off a production line.

I like Pizza. I disagree it's an aspie thing though. I have seen lot of NTs who like Pizza or unless they were aspie too and I didn't even know it.

I'm generally curious to find out about how other people behave and interact with the world, and in particular to find out how AS people behave. As Shiggily said it's about trying to find similarities. My guess is that aside from the "obvious" symptoms there are lot of things that are slightly more common in people with AS; not prerequisites, just things that are a little bit more likely.

(Edit - pretty much what pandd was saying)

I think many parents commonly observe that people with autism like pizza, we should blame the pizza!

I think that it is important to remember that associated (with AS) food preferences, are not of a 'people with AS like food X' kind, but rather of a 'people with AS might be inclined to develop habits around eating preferences' and refers more to things such as a strong preference/need/compulsion to eat at a particular time, or preference/need/compulsion to always use particular cutlery, or narrow dietary preferences...etc'.

People with AS can manifest AS-related fixations and preference for sameness around food and eating. Why should food and eating necessarily be immune to, or excluded from these behaviors?

Exactly. But people will always be trying to discover what causes certain behavior, so they look for connections, even remote ones. It's okay for people to look for the connections because some do apply and it's good to know you're not alone if you have AS. Maybe one of the symtoms of AS is to try to connect all the dots!

On the other hand, there are those who look for something to blame for their problems. This is the really bad one since they are false connections. AS gets a bad (or worse) name. I think lawyers add to this problem... they say their clients killed someone (or whatever) because they have AS. That's so wrong.

I agree. Not everything we do is Aspie. I do lots of stuff non-aspie related.

This is an interesting point, out of some sense of pride I refuse to allow myself to be defined by my medical conditions and my AS status.

I do somethings becuase I want to and NOT becuase I have AS. If I gaze out over a landscape and enjoy the view it is not me being AS it is just me enjoying the view.

But on the other side of the coin, I know that I am different from the majority. I am here with my own kind, as a result I am likely on average to have more in common with the other WP people than I will with the general population. For instance I guess that a lot of people here will eat their food one item at a time, (I do that each time I sit down to eat) most NTs do not do that. It might be something we have in common but it is not something which I think defines who and what we are as people.

I also susepct that we are good at spotting patterns, so maybe we do start to join the dots. I think that the joining the dots is one of our strengths, we should not be ashamed of it. So maybe we might think that we are just a series of AS related things. But I want to say that while it might seem that we are that way, when you look more closely we are not.

Diagnosed under the DSM5 rules with autism spectrum disorder, under DSM4 psychologist said would have been AS (299.80) but I suspect that I am somewhere between 299.80 and 299.00 (Autism) under DSM4.

I love pizza, I could eat every single day in my life... before my marriage I used to do it. My wife often points me: what pizza, again? Now I do the same to her: What... vegetables... again?
